As a fourteen year listener of House Music and eight years in the business in one form or another, Tommie Sunshine knew it was time to share his musical prophecy with this planet. He felt the world was ready for the musical design that is his, xylophone jones Recordings.
Spring of 2001 saw the realization of an on-going visualization of a "different" kind of electronic music in the form of xylophone jones Recordings. With several white labels distributed over the course of the '96, '97, '98 and '99 Winter Music Conferences in Miami, not a one of these EP's ever saw a commercial release. Even still, something was brewing. The '96 white was a split 12" by Keith Maniac (then aka Wamdue Kids) and IDM wunderkind Richard Devine. The '97 white was a sampler with tracks by Oliver Dodd, Bobble, Birdman and Sunshine alongside Bryan Ogden. This saw Oliver's track licensed to K7 in Germany by Dave Clarke for his 'Electro Boogie 2' mix compilation for both CD and vinyl versions. The '98 white was a full EP from Birdman which the A-side ended on Nigel Richards' 'Whistle' mix CD on Kinetic. '99 saw a split 12" from xylophone jones Recordings and Woody McBride's imprint Communiqu￩ which, on the xylophone jones Recordings side saw Sunshine team up with Birdman and Oliver Dodd as American Scream and Chris Brann (Wamdue, P'Taah, Ananda Project) as Jackass & Mule.
Supporters of the label since it's inception have been Josh Wink, Felix da Housecat, DJ Sneak, Confucius and Monk (Rabbit in the Moon), Mark Farina, Deep C and Chris Udoh, Colette, Sven Vath, Thomas Bangalter (Daft Punk), Derrick Carter, Bear Who? and Junior Sanchez. With this kind of support we expect magnificent things from xylophone jones Recordings by the hand of Dust Traxx's very own Promotional Director and A&R liaison.
With its slogan of 'Electro-Roller-Boogie-Techno-Disco', the music is just that. A genre buffet with elements of each dipping in and out like the tides and made for both headphone listening and dancing alike. A future forward approach to the ever-changing Dance Music business is how Sunshine sees his horizon.
The introduction to xylophone jones Recordings through the Dust Traxx channel sees a re-release of the Jackass & Mule track '1-2-3 Miami' with remixes by Detroit New/No Wave Darlings Adult. and New York City's resident Electro genius John Selway. Airplay on both Chicago's commercial dance station B96 and the UK's #1 radio station BBC Radio One have set this one up nicely and we anticipate great things from xylophone jones Recordings. A new kid on the block compared to some of the fixture labels in the Dust Traxx domain, xylophone jones Recordings sees music without boundaries and genre classification. This is the intersection of Acid House, Italo Disco, early New York Breakdance and proper Electro. Each release may favor a particular corner of that intersection but borders all of them. Future releases will see EP's by 8-Bit (from Australia), Hakan Lidbo (from Sweden) and Binge & Purge (Mark Verbos and Sunshine) leading the label into 2006.
