External Harddisks

Are they as reliable/stable as internal HDs or do they crash randomly?
ex:Can i trust one with all my mp3 collection and use it as storage?

Also from personal experience what are the best External HD brands to invest my money in cause im 1gb away from a full internal harddisk and i need extra space.

Since this is computer related, can anyone lebanese tell me which store i can pick up a Mac OS X, Leopard Edition from?Since most stores around me think i'm speaking Alien language when i ask for Mac Os X

But mine is 120GB (111 actually). And it will be full soon cuz i have only 16GB of free space left. So i'll buy a new one this week (320GB).

I never had a problem with it and it's very useful when you have a lot of music or other things that take place on the disk.

Nah seriously i didn't pay attention to the name the guy told me there's a special offer on it (at 133$ instead of a higher price) and that it's Samsung (if i remember well).

But yea, Seagate is a very good brand.

never back up your music on a HDD.. failure is bound to strike sooner or later!!

backup to DVDs!! now you got the opportunity to use 9 GB DVDs, not to mention that this way you'll minimize risk by diversifying your database!

^Don't DVDs take much more time to back up your music on?
The good thing about HDDs is that you remove them off your computer, but still get to listen to any track you have, while if you had them on DVDs, you would have to search for the track, put the appropriate DVD, etc...
I'm only saying this because I'm looking for a good solution. I have about 75 GB backed up on my HDD and any failure will erase everything.

I'm def going for an External HDD,even if there's a good chance of data loss still better than storing on DVDs,im not good with reserving CDs,one major accidental scratch and it's game over specially if there's lots of Data saved and u get only half of it.
If only Macs weren't too damn expensive. Nothing made by Apple ever disappoints.

I bought a Toshiba 1.8inch 200gb for only 70$ in California.

now I wouldn't recommend u this one since it heats up and block easily, but my advice would be that u ask someone to buy it for u from the States or Dubai, these stuff are up to 3 or 4 times cheaper sometimes!

1000gb and everything is on it--all in one place. there are GEMS howevedr that if i lost would be lost forever and those are on DVDs.

Those who prefer storing on DVDs can label them alphabetically (artists' names). It makes things a tiny bit easier if you're looking for specific tracks.
On my external HD i have the tracks in folders 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, etc...
