okay- the XONE:3D...
yes... I love Allen & Heath for taking DJ mixers to the next level- and making other DJ mixers follow (like the DJM800).
I do indeed have the Xone:92-it's actually the mixers 3rd anniversary in my life ... ohh yeah! should celebrate really...
why do I love it like a girlfriend?
faders, smooth and clean and 80mm long... EQ 4 band (high, mid-high, mid low, and low) so now you can clean out the kick at around 70Hz while keeping the bassline... intelligent cue meaning when you select a channel to cue, it only listens to that one channel... if you wanna hear two sources at the same time you click both cue buttons together!
headphone jack- two of them, one regular 1/4" jack and a secon mini-jack... so you can plug in two pairs of headphones at the same time- most headphones are mini-jack anyway, just unscrew the adaptor..
Aux Sends- two knobs a-top of each of the 6 mixable channels to send the source to a EFX unit (used the KAOS pad, EFX-500 & 1000, and even a 19" rack-mountable TC Electronics Fireworks in the past).
It's super flexible- and the effect "adds" to the sound rather than the pioneers "all sound goes to the effects" which is annoying cause you can't control the level, EQ or "amount" of the effects send/return.
On the pioneer it's "on" or "off" on the Xone:92 you can give a litte or a lot on ANY channel, even in pre-fade mode (thanks to the pre/post fade buttons on the AUX send knobs) so basically feeding the effects BEFORE you even fade the channel up- refer to Club Frequency for a constant demo
and the filters... please don't let me open this subject cause I will bore the "muzahara" out of you with my romantic passion for the 2 filters on each side of the cross-fader...
lets' get into the XONE:3D...
it's a trim-down version of the Xone:92 with loads more MIDI control...
target? Ableton DJs, Traktor, and all the new DJ software that keeps getting created everyday!
If you've used Ableton you'd love the 3D for having all the assignable faders/knobs, and buttons... esp the jog-dial that saves you from reaching over to your mouse to "click" while mixing in front of thousands of people...
my slight problem with the 3D? mic input is BS... the 92 has a FULL 4-band EQ & aux send for the mic inputs- 2 of them with a dedicated fader for each... the headphone jack on the 3D is on the lower side of the mixer- not exactly the best place to be located, but makes sense if you dont' want your headphone cable getting in the way....and the EQ is only 3-band... DJs like PvD in the past clearly in BOLD on their tech rider say "NO ALLEN & HEATH MIXER" with the caps lock on... becasue the EQ section is 4-band... so I think with feedback on the prototype Xone:3D Djs said "please make it 3-band EQ"..
that was one of the highlight of the 92...
anyway... the 3D is indeed a GREAT mixer... it's like a 92 with MIDI capabilities you would kill for... if using a pc/laptop/mac is what you do for a live set, then the 3D would be just for you...
just one last note: with so many different kinds of software to use with live mixing, it's the software that determines what the next piece of hardware will be... not other way-round, so it's only a matter of time before yet another revoulutionary software comes out that would need a whole new mixer/MIDI controller...
PvD used it in Beirut if anyone remembers... I'll try to get that pic of his set-up uploaded for all you to see...
I was so happy that PvD switched out of the Pioneer and converted to Allen & Heath...
am I a nerd? sure do feel like it before clicking "submit"
excuse my love for techy stuff...
