Survival Horror with an incredibly gruesome combat, deep story line, disturbing atmospheric environments. Hold on to the edge of your seat - this will leave you scarily shitless... literally!
Dubbed ''the most terrifying game of the year'' Dead Space was out in Northern America last week and will hit European shelves on Friday.
I've got the game yesterday and played through a bit and I must say this is a fantastic game from EA! I don't know if EA published any action games before, but this is very nifty work!
You play as Issac Clarke, an engineer, who works for a stellar mining company. You are sent as a member of crew to respond to a distress call and rendezvous with Ishimura, a galactic planet destroyer that goes across the galaxy destroying planet and extracting the ore from their debris.
The crew gets ambushed shortly after landing at Ishimura by an unknown and unidentifiable hostile enemy with only Isaac and two other members surviving. You're objectives are finding out what happened to the over-a-1000-crew-members of Ishimura and obviously in the meantime staying alive.
Your enemy is Nacromorph: a virus that gets into dead bodies, takes control of the torsos after gruesomely mutilating them, and rises them up (very resident evil-esque) with a few more additions to the anatomy of those dead bodies like extra limbs and longer original limbs than humans.
It appears clear that you're fighting an alien virus and amidst all the mess and objectives to fix the ship and get the hell out of there, lies a deep story (that you might lose track of sometimes) and a twisted ending.
You play in full gravity but there are environments of zero-gravity (an ocean of details there - floating bodies and blood drops have such an eery effect). What makes your task harder, is that you're not a soldier: you're an engineer. Thus, you're not equipped with weapons really. What you find throughout the games are tools to use to beat you enemies like a futuristic chainsaw, plasma capsules, and other sci-fi tools to help you beat them.
How to beat them? Dead Space springs a unique approach here - you dismember the Narcomorph.
While most shooter games gets you to shoot the head or chest of your enemy, Dead Space requires you to chop off you enemies' limbs to you'd reduce their movement. You could empty a magazine in their chests, they'd still chase you - you must cut off their arms and legs, then feel free to go up to their crawling torso and smash their heads off. Don't leave bodies behind, they'll crawl after you and bite you in the neck - you must dismember them and leave unrecognizable flesh behind you.
Gory, bloody, disturbing, terrifying and will leave you utterly and genuinely engrossed in the story line and moments of sheer brilliance from EA. Don't play this with the lights off! This is survival horror redefined!
