Ever got the sad icon of death on your old iPod? Only to throw it because warranty is gone? You can make it work again, check out how:
My iPod is a 4th generation 20GB, dont know if this works for other models. This procedure require you to open your iPod carefully, unplug the hard drive and give it a little tap, to "wake it up". Make sure your iPod is fairly charged, turned off and with the Hold button activated. If you are not careful in cover opening process you will create scratches and oh boy these scratches are ugly! As silly as the "little tap" might sound but, this is the main problem while iPod freeze or die, its because the hardrives's needle is stuck at one point, the clicking is the sound of the needle trying to reposition itself, if you put your iPod near to your ear when its clicking you can hear it clearly and you can hear how the drive is constantly trying to spin.
What you need: 1 thing: screw driver, (the negative one "-") thats it.
What you will do in this operation: You will open the cover of the iPod, and remove the hard drive, if you have a faint heart you might lose conscience in the process
All right here we go:
Step 1 - open the hood
Place the iPod face down (shiny face up) and open the iPod using a screw driver, the back shinny cover should pop out when you carefully slide in a screw driver from the side (DO NOT PUT THE SCREW IN THE TOP RIGHT AREA), start from the right middle and slide slowly towards the bottom, when you reach the corner the cover should pop out. There is a wire that connects the 2 covers together on the top right side as you can see in the , that's why you should not start opening the cover from this area.
Step 2 - unplugging the heart
The hard drive has a blue rubber protection on the sides. On the top, there is a small black plug that is plugged in the hard drive, unplug it slowly (remember that it plugs on the top right side of the hard drive).
Step 3 - shaking the dead
The hard drive is in your hand (feels good dosnt it?) give a couple of taps from the sides (I gave it 2 from each side) and one or two on the surface, not too strong.
Step 4 - putting it back
Put the hard drive back where it was, plug the black cable (on the top right side), make sure all is in place. Put the cover back and slowly close it by pressing the sides together.
Step 5 - will he wake up?
Deactivate the Hold button, press play a couple of times and wait for the pretty little bitten apple logo to appear, if so, you're iPod is back to life, hallelujah!
