About Oil Spill Lebanon:
Oil Spill in the Eastern Mediterranean
[align=justify]The Israeli aggression against Lebanon did not only intentionally target civilians and destroy infrastructure; it also attacked the country’s natural environment. During the first days of the war, an Israeli air raid on the Jiyyeh electrical power plant resulted in spilling 15,000 tons of heavy fuel oil into the Mediterranean and the burning of about 25,000 tonnes. Hitting more than 100 km of the Lebanese coast, more than 50 km of the Syrian coast and still moving Northwards, this spill could be considered as one of the largest environmental disasters in the Mediterranean history. Turkish, Cypriot and Greek coasts are at high risk of being hit by the spill.
The detrimental environmental, social and economical impacts of this spill have started and will most likely continue for many years to come.
Sensitive fish spawning and nursery areas as well as valuable sea turtle nesting sites in one of the most important Mediterranean ecosystems were directly hit by this highly toxic oil.
The air pollution resulting from the continuous burning of the tanks in the Jiyyeh power plant fuel and the vapours of the floating oil are affecting all the coastal areas that are now inhabited by about three million people. On the longer term, this will lead to increased cancer cases, respiratory problems and other diseases. Another important impact of the spill is its effect on tourism and other economical sectors. T
he Lebanese coast is an important tourist/recreation destination, and the livelihood source for thousands of fishermen. Large parts of it have now become useless, because they are covered with oil. Most local fishermen, especially in Beirut and Jbeil (Byblos), have not been able to fish for more than 20 days because their boats are stuck in oil, their fishing grounds heavily polluted and Israeli naval and air forces are attacking all moving objects at sea. These local fishermen need to be compensated as soon as possible so that they can support their families.
The total direct economic cost of this oil spill has been estimated at more than 200 million dollars. The long term costs are not determined yet and are likely to be much more. Even after a month of the attack and the spill occurrence, no clean up operations were started yet, due to the ongoing Israeli aggression targeting basically civilians. The oil has settled deep into the sand, rocks and seabed. Delaying the cleanup operations further makes this spill more dangerous and harder to clean.
We demand the international community to expedite immediate and accurate assessment operations and allocate the necessary funds for cleanup operations to start.
We accuses Israel with the primary responsibility for this intentional environmental crime and holds the US administration also morally responsible through hindering an immediate cease fire at the UN Security Council for more than three weeks.
We requests the International community to force Israel to pay all costs of cleanup operations and indemnities to the people affected by short and long term impacts of this and other crimes against humanity.
We request the Lebanese government to start the cleanup operations as soon as possible and to carry these operations in the most environmentally sound way possible.
We call upon the Lebanese government, after the Israeli aggression ends, to put an emergency response plan in place for similar catastrophes in the future.

Resistance for Peace (RFP) was founded in Vienna in the summer of 2003. It is an independent organisation, the aim of which is to become international. RFP supports Human rights, Animal rights and the protection of the Environment. It is made up of activists who, over the years, have gathered vast experience on an international basis through their involvement in protests and demonstrations (Animal transport blockades, Nuclear power station sit-ins, etc). RFP currently protests against the Israeli agressions on Lebanon and the oil spill disaster caused by their war.
RFP puts, through demonstrations and media campaigns, pressure on the EU and the UN, which are both located and represented in Vienna, in order to force Israel to pay for the whole clean up of the environmental disaster(s) that happened along the Lebanese coast. Futhermore, RFP organizes charity concerts and information stands in order to get financial support for the oil spill working group, a coalition of independent environmental activists and local NGOs under the guidance of "Green Line Association". In addition, RFP also supports the medical unit of the "Samidoun Relief Center", which is as well under the guidance of "Green Line Association" and which used to be the biggest refief center during the Israeli war on Lebanon. Concerning the current middle east crisis, RFP is part of a coalition with the Austrian "peace platform" (
