Saturday night, Lebanon's clubbers were set to witness two milestones in the Trance music industry. Two names that had yet to be given the deserved exposure in a country that has seen over a hundred names paying it a visit.
I arrived at the venue at 12h30, Jade and Diamond Setter were delivering a pumping set that was obviously getting the crowd going. I just got to hear their ending, but judging from the reaction, the guys were doing a good job. First thing I noticed about the venue was the simple but efficient lighting, nothing too fancy, but enough to put on a good show. As for the sound system, I found the distribution to be satisfying since you could hear clearly whatever your position is on the dance floor (then again, I speak from a personal point of view since I am no expert in the field). I enjoyed the overall setup which obviously was looking to put more emphasis on the music that was being played.
At 12h45, the time had come for Cosmic Gate to make their entrance. Having not been in touch with the trance sound for quite a while now, I couldn't ID any track that was played by the duo. The first hour or so was not exactly my cup of tea with a lot of vocal trance and mellow breakdowns, but the crowd was obviously having a blast while singing along every track. The 2nd hour was much more ear-pleasing for me, with more edgy material being pumped. In their set, Nic and Bossi managed to satisfy the crowd's various needs. A job well done by the duo even if I was hoping that they play a couple of their classics.
All of that was really nice and cute. But for me and a lot of others, the night was all about a bald-headed legend that was finally handed a decent time-table to deliver one of his trademark sets. And what a set that was. All I ever heard about John was nothing but rave reviews (mainly from the horniest 00 fan in here: Gen), and all I can say is that this guy more than delivered. I have honestly never seen a more fluid set. The only DJ who wowed me from this perspective was Ferry, but now there is a new name in town. From the beginning to the very end, John 00 Fleming kept the crowd on their feet dancing as if there were no tomorrow. I thought I had seen it all before last night. The legend lived up to its reputation. His music, his interaction with the crowd, everything was perfect. John made a great night even greater. I could not ID more than one track sadly (Sub 6 - Down 'n' Out). Unfortunately I could not stay for Dio's set because my feet could not carry anymore. But knowing our guy, I have no doubts he delivered a terrific set and made the after-hours experience a memorable one yet again.
All in all, it had been a while since I last attended a gig, but last night was definitely worth the wait. Poliakov and NRJ are definitely forging a solid reputation alongside the big guns of the industry. And with a double-header Warren/Cattaneo lurking around the corner. It can only get better.
Pros:
-Cosy set up
-Great music
-A full venue at peak time
-Very good organization
-Psychedelic finally making an appearance as a main set in a large-scale event
Cons:
-Whenever the DJs came up on stage, they were not announced by an MC or something
-The crowd started fleeing midway through John's set. Not everyone can absorb the music I guess.
Finally thanks to everyone especially the organizers, Shy--Ism, Dion, Rima, TranceFusion, Robert, TRANCED, Serj, and anyone I stumbled upon during that night that I failed to remember here.
Until the next one.
