Critic?

Postby Genesis » Sat Feb 18, 2006 5:16 am

I'm interested in knowing how critic you can be regarding your music... Some
of us might be perfectionists when it comes to trance, but are your standards
high? How high can they get and when do those standards start to limit your
aural enjoyment? Do you think that you're sometimes too critical and fussy
when it comes to certain tunes? or certain producer's sound?

when is a gig ruined for you? how would u consider a set as a total failure in
musical terms? Still keeping in mind that a DJ is just a human prone to errors
and faults in his performance, how many of those errors can u accept?

I've been thinking of some gigs that I've been to before and tried to measure
how satisfied i was in musical terms.. trying to get some sort of an average,
ultimate, and unacceptable performance. had thoughts about me being easy/
hard to satisfy when it gets to trance.

So, i just thought of seeing how would u guys look at this...

I am quite picky about a lot of stuff.

DJ Acts & Events: I prefer the DJ to play a lot of unknown yet "attractive" tracks that really catch my attention. It shows the DJ's style of music that doesn't show commercial tracks being played. I also enjoy it when they play some of my fav tracks atm or even all time...keeps me up. I can't take "trainwrecks" at all...they really hurt my ear and mood, so that would be a big "no-no" for me. As long as they dont lose momentum ... they're doing great. It always depends really...i haven't seen much events lately but yeah...so far, that's what i'd like to expect.

Production: I need to hear a "bang" ... the "own" sound feeling for that artist, but at the same time...shouldn't be repetitive with his/her work.

That should pretty much cover the general side for me.

i think i can be picky when it comes to music.. not all sounds do appeal to me (especially non-trance music..) and i do tend to criticize openly anything that i dont find it up to my standards but i never do insult producers coz i do realise it's all a matter of different tastes (and here where i get into debates with lots of ppl who go on bashing producers coz they simply dont appeal to them..)

as for gigs, my main concern would be music.. i dont get pissed at little mistakes as i do understand we're all humans after all but i get really pissed if i went to a gig to find the music so boring, repetitive or just not good..

oh one more thing that unfortunately been pissing me off since ages.. it's the sound quality! always high bass and vocals can be barely heard (along with many essential other elements..) i wonder if sound check is never done with some vocals?!
Never argue with idiots. They bring you down to their level and beat you with experience

I'm really picky too. I might be very harsh sometimes when judging a tune or
a producer's style which might not be perfectly healthy. I don't know why I
sometimes feel angry when a tune is not up to my expectations: I wouldn't be
only confronted with disappointed if I've been waiting for it for a while or the
producer is actually on my A-list, but it would also seriously ruin my mood.
Less that 25% of what I buy or listen to its online samples matches my criteria.
I guess each of us is picky in his own way regarding tunes.

When it comes to gigs: trainwrecks and erros are ok as long as they're not
seriously getting repeated. I don't recall that much errors that ruined my
night actually. Repetetive music is a no-no. Mood also plays a part, but I
don't really get moody when clubbing: I'm generally satisfied - in fact, this
might go down to my selecting a few gigs that I'm almost totally sure I'll
enjoy and then show up at. My aural enjoyment is not easily achieved, but
I enjoy good music even if it wasn't totally my thing to listen to.
(I've always enjoyed sets by Nick Warren, Dave Seaman & lately Luke
Nevill as well as Simon Patterson although their music is not totally my
type)

I don't remember a gig where I got pissed off from the music and stormed
out of the nightclub crying on the security's shoulder.

Generally? I am HELLA picky, but at the same time my taste is diverse. When I'm asked what my favorite types of music are, I tend to list a buttload of different genres, sub-genres, and whatnot. AND my liking is often mistaken for "everything". NO- Not everything. Perhaps not anything mainstream (aside from good, ol' classic rock, classical, oldskool hip-hop, and a bit of 80s here and there).

As with trance, I'm rather anal about vocals because I am a vocallist myself. I am yet to delve into the whole tech trance scene, plus more and more on everything else.
