Skytec offer up a new multi-channel mixer for the DJ or club owner on a budget...
For maximum input flexibility from a mixer, you can’t go far wrong with the Skytec TEC450. It’s a six-channel unit, offering three inputs per channel, a fully assignable crossfader and a built-in echo effect. The TEC450 can be used in a number of different situations too, be that for the beat-mix DJing in a club scenario, mobile applications or even karaoke.
The TEC450 has clearly been put together to meet a price mark, so don’t expect the best quality components, although this downside is balanced by respectable features. So, while the faders are sluggish and the build’s a bit tinny, you do get a three-band EQ, gain control on each channel and fair sound quality. Which for £120 (that’s less than £20 per channel!) can’t be bad.
As well as appealing to those on a tight budget, the TEC450 could be a handy back-up mixer for those on the road. For applications of that ilk, the TEC450 provides space enough to incorporate the most extensive of DJ set-ups, with each channel loaded with a top-panel combo mic connection and line and phono inputs at the rear.
Elsewhere there are two master outputs, each controlled by top panel faders (one of which can be used as your monitor/booth output), plus a dedicated record-out feed. Finally, FX. On a mixer at this price, these are an unexpected extra, yet each channel comes with an independent echo effect. This feature works a lot better than expected: it does reflect the cost of this unit, but nevertheless is a nice bonus.
Conclusion
Overall, the TEC450 is neither the most attractive, nor the best performing multi-channel mixer we’ve come across, but it is one of the cheapest. And you definitely get your money’s worth here.
Verdict
A multi-channel mixer for those on a tight budget.
Alternatives
We couldn’t uncover any alternative six-channel mixers at this price, but other affordable multi-input mixers include the Kam KAP-500 and Gemini PMX-1400 (both four channels) and the Numark DM1090 and Citronic AM-7 (both three channels).
