Hip Hop Meet EDM , EDM meet Hip Hop !!

First of all ... you are ALL underground and cool , and dont listen to this kind of shit !! Its all about progtechdubspymelodictehno for you people ... I KNOW !!

Now that we got that out of the way , lets try to have a good , constructive discussion.

EDM has been crossing into mainstream alot lately , and what we might call cheese , is becoming chart topping material ! But what is really attracting my attention lately , is that hop hop is being introduced in EDM tracks more and more ! People like Swedish House Mafia , Tiesto , Diplo , Riva Starr , Mason , Afrojack, Bart B etc... have been trying to mix both styles together ! And alot of mashups are being done with old , popular hip hop tracks along with popular house tracks .

Most of the tracks are not to my liking , but some of them are ok ! And when i play at regular nights , where its not advertised as a full EDM night , most of the people react to such tracks ! So you cant deny that its gaining popularity !!

Do you think its a phase , and it will fade out soon , or are we witnessing a major change in the club / dance music scene ?

DONT FORGET .... YOU ARE ALL TOTALLY UNDERGROUND ! I KNOW ...

eh underground! we can barely peak up! :P

well i think the fusion that is happening nowadays is the way for EDM to cross to the states. or somehow this is the intention of some producers who are going full force with this "hybrid" of music. The likes of Tiesto would be on top of this list as he's (as usual) managed to once again take the lead in introducing new concepts to the scene, regardless whether we agree/disagree/like/dislike his approach, and creating new hype all around the globe!
his track with Three 6 Mafia (Feel it) is breaking records in the states with more than 13 million views on youtube alone!
I personally think this is but the tip of the iceberg, back in the 80s we witnessed the fusion between House and Hip Hop on so many levels, it seems now is the time of a Trance - Hip Hop fusion. where this will take us? only time will tell!
Never argue with idiots. They bring you down to their level and beat you with experience

Tiesto 'Would Love To Be In The Studio' With Jay-Z

Dutch-born electronic artist Tiësto — a top-five fixture on DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs since the chart began and one of the highest-grossing live-performance earners in the electronic music genre — has moved on from just making trance music. With the release of his album Kaleidoscope last year, Tiësto (a.k.a. Tijs Verwest) underscored his intention to evolve. The album featured collaborations with Nelly Furtado, indie darlings Tegan and Sara, Jónsi from Sigur Rós and Kele Okereke from Bloc Party. Also, in November of last year Tiësto joined forces with Three 6 Mafia along with Sean Kingston and Flo Rida for a single by the Memphis rappers called "Feel It," with a video that has attracted 10 million views online.

"It was an amazing experience to work with those guys," Tiësto told MTV News recently. "I just made in the studio a little beat, a little melody. I never really developed it. And they went to the studios and they were all sitting right next to each other — Three 6 Mafia, Sean Kingston and Flo Rida — and the whole collaboration comes together. It's phenomenal how something so underground can become so big."

Tiësto said he enjoys working with artists whose work he admires and that his core audience has grown from just trance-music fans.

"It's not just a trance crowd anymore that come to my show," Tiësto said. "It's really a very diverse crowd who loves electronic music. And someone like Calvin Harris — they're into Diplo, they're into Santigold, they're into everything like Kaskade or deadmau5 and they'll all come to my shows, because I think Tiësto is for everyone."

Tiësto confirmed he has completed work with Major Lazer producer and frequent M.I.A. collaborator Diplo on a song called "Come On," though details such as a release date are still being hashed out. But we found out that Tiësto does have an ultimate collaboration he would like to see happen in the future.

"I have my eye on one really big artist that I would love to work with, and that's Jay Z," he said. "Such a legend. He's such a phenomenal artist ... I mean, I would love to be in the studio with this guy for a day or two. You guys should make it happen for me — let's do it, let's go!"

Interestingly, we recently caught up with producer and frequent Jay-Z collaborator Just Blaze, fresh off a house-music set at the Fool's Gold Showcase at Miami's Winter Music Conference and he co-signed the possible match, terming it a partnership for made for success.

"It could be cool because both of them are at the top of their field," Blaze told MTV News. "It's not some regular producer trying to make a dance record, and it's not like some dance producer who knows somebody who raps and putting him on a track. That could be pretty crazy. The clubs will have a smash. I might have to make that happen — Jay

LOL ...

Samer , i agree with what you said ... about the US being to blame !! They are always to blame !!

I dont think that trance and hip hop can really be blended well together , due to the high difference in BPM ... it will just sound horrible !! I have a couple of house remixes of some hip hop tracks , and the bpm is around 125 , and it sounds sooo bad !! imagine the same track with a 130 + bpm ! LOL ... I would go home !!

Gen ! Of course its about money , popularity , fame , staying on top of the game etc .... what those guys are doing appeals more to the masses than to the elite ( you of course ) , few refined tates in EDM .

and regarding me playing that shit !! I am not a big fan of most of those tracks , but like i said some of them are not bad , i will put examples at the end of my post . The nights when i play for fun and they are not announced to be a full on edm nights , if i play what i really want to play , people will leave the place ! A smart Dj also knows how to please the crowd , indirectly ....

There is absolutely nothing new here Q.

Why is it so fucking hard for Trance music fans, who namely disguise themselves as EDM lovers btw, to accept that any music can be fused with any other form of music? It has always been like that. Just like Genesis mentioned, the whole fusion thing between Hiphop and House has been happening since a long time ago.

If it is "trance music's turn" then so be it. You guys make it seem like it's something so disgusting.

I tell ya man, I like you for playing those tracks out loud. I have played a lot of commercial stuff. No matter how much DJs deny it, they WILL play "commercial" stuff during the early stages of their DJing before they start shooting up high like AvB and all the rest. You will play what the people want whether you like it or not.

Now that this is out of the way, my response to your question is that this is NORMAL. It is not really a phase, but more like part of the whole electronic music waves. Artists will experiment and come up with either good or bad stuff. Your perception will differ than many others. I will point out, however, that the majority of the people (and I have mentioned this various times) want to go out to clubs to party and listen to songs they know and fusion of music they like. Get it? Their definition of partying is so different than ours by light years! Light years I tell ya! So if let's say Tiesto's new track hits the dancefloor, people will most likely enjoy it instead of wondering if this beat was used in Gareth Emery's remix of Ma7moud Abdelsalam's "Tears of the bird which flew into Ferry's window cuz of sadness".

What I am typing here is something that we ALL know very well and have discussed before. There is absolutely nothing new here.

It is not a phase. It is part of the eletronic music wave. Ride it, or you'll be left behind. You think the 40k ppl showing up at Trance Energy are wary of the music being played? Hell no man! They just go to PARTY. They all know its this big arena filled with loud pumping music, tons of ppl, probably drugs (which we cant deny. lets face it), and long hours of dancing. This is the formula of a good time to MOST ppl (excluding drugs in some circumstances).

The nightlife scene is an industry for most promoters and club owners so it HAS to evolve to meet the people's needs. Don't believe me? I want you to go to every single Dancevalley year's lineup and witness the difference in DJs playing there. Look at all the clubs and the music being played in there! Sure its top 40 stuff, but what are THESE top 40 tracks?

Look at it from the bigger picture.

Its nothing new and has been done before . I agree , but what i meant , was that this trend is actually hitting it big ( again or not again depending on your point of views )

Big name Djs , who can actually get away with playing whatever they want , because they are that popular and famous , are playing these tracks willingly . Now , i am not saying this is a bad thing , and like you said , we all have played commercial tracks . and to be honest , lately , here in Amman , when i casually dj for a couple of hours , at a non announced all edm night , i enjoy playing such tracks !! Love to get my hands on mashups , remixes , productions etc ... of old and popular tracks that people dont know , and play them out loud ! The crowds reaction is priceless .

Especially here in Jordan, where the whole " EDM " scene is sitll sooo small , immature and insignificant , its hard to find the perfect blend of crowd , venue , and music !

At the end of the day , like you said Crow , most people have no clue whats being played when they go out ! 98 % percent of my friends cannot remember one single track from the night before . Even when we are in Ibiza, the only time they could remember tracks was when they went to flower power at pacha , 80's night !! LOOL ... I stayed in that night , but they still had a great time non the less .... Even at Flow , the venue i play at the most these days , its usually the radio music that people want to hear ... and there is nothing wrong with it !

I am just saying ... the popularity of those type of tracks is increasing

dude.. Hip-Hop has been dead in mainstream for more than a decade and almost two....

what you are referring to is Hip-Pop. Typical Pop has always been part of the mainstream EDM culture since it's inception and made extremely blatant when EDM went mainstream, so the transition to Hip-Pop is not in any shape or form surprising.

Yes, there is some absolute gem Hip-Hop that has been produced in the past 10 years, but it was/is beyond underground and i doubt any of it made it to any of Tiesto or any EDM artist tracks.

P.S. Besides, True hip-hop invented EDM as we know it ... so it's not quite surprising either way.
