This is utterly disappointing! Can't many of the great tracks in trance be actually creatively made from scratch and not stolen from a great folk song like this one??

It's not like Christy Moore is the one who wrote the song. Actually, I think its origins are pretty much unknown.

Plenty of people have taken a stab at it. So did Cara Dillon. And then 2Devine did their bit. Finally, Above & Beyond gave us the remix that we love so much.

I wouldn't really call it stealing. The lyrics and the arrangement of the song are really good, so I'm sure plenty of people would like to do their own bit and play it the way they deem it best (just like Christy Moore did in fact). The fact that it's a folk song with unknown origins just makes it easier for people to do so.

It was only a matter of time before we saw a trance version of it.

But I would beg to differ on the part where you said that trance vocals would never have deep meanings.

Yes, I would say 90% (Maybe even more) of trance lyrics are total utter crap. But some of them are good. Deep, without too much crap going into it. For example, I'm a big fan of Oceanlab's lyrics.

But I guess that you don't find too much meaning in trance vocals because it's not really a target for writers to do so. For example, when you're writing folk songs, you're looking to tell a tale that is timeless, that can be retold time and time again without it ever losing its meaning. Other genres have different aims for their lyrics

Trance isn't really the genre to tell tales through its lyrics, it's not meant to do so and it's not suited to do so.

Personally, I don't really base my judgment on vocal trance too much on the meaning behind the lyrics. I mostly base it on whether the vocals really belong in a track. If it seems like it's slapped above the instruments, then it's crappy. If it feels like a part of the track, like an instrument on its own, then it's a hit for me.

ive heard the Natasha Atlas version , its pretty good considering that its not an EDM track .
