Should DJs be judged by their live performance or radio show

Postby crow » Sun May 10, 2009 12:54 pm

One of the greatest things about the EDM industry is that it is rapidly changing and rising above ground no matter how much people still think it is underground. Part of the rapid rise is the appearance of many new DJs and the advancing of old ones along with radio shows.

However, it seems that people are judging DJs by their radio shows, live performances, or even both.

Judging may be good or bad.

I personally think that DJs should be judged by their live performances as they represent their true skills in the field rather than sitting at home and prerecording a mix. Track selection will always differ. Sure there can be a few common tracks here and there, but your skills are not the same. Take Markus Schulz for example. (Best example actually). His Global DJ Broadcast bores me to death! But his mixes live are unbelievably different and energetic!!!

DJs are made to play out loud and not in bedrooms. Regardless of the new comers that start off as bedroom DJs. Radio Shows are simply promotional tools at the hands of any DJ out there.

i would go more with live performance as well ... because there are many more issues that you should use to judge a dj , such as track selection , technical abilities , crowd interaction , color of his hair ( Kidding )

Radio shows usually show case new releases , and personal taste incoporated together , regardless of the listener .

I would go with live performance. Ferry's live performances are top notch, but CC isn't my cup of tea

Of course by their live performance because Compiling a radio show is every dj's comfort zone, no pressure or requirement to have a crowd sense and going with the flow of the crowd's interaction & their energy, to me a dj that can read the crowd even up to 60% is a good dj because there's no way you can cover up and target 100% of the crowd's taste there will always be a bunch of unhappy groups leaving disappointed and requesting a refund, the kinda audience that trash a Track List just because their favorite tune that they most likely heard on that dj's radio show wasn't included.

I enjoy both equally; though it depends on my mood at the end of the day, but for each their own character that always come out. A good DJ is a good DJ, be it on a radio show or a gig.
If your trance was a pretty blonde ballerina; then what I listen to is a peed-off bulky bouncer pounding the living shit out of your ballerina.

The best way to judge a DJ would be seeing him at a love performance. The bigger the crowd the bigger the adrenaline rush and stress. Dj will then be judged on how he reacts to the crowd keeping them entertained the whole night
