Recently being dubbed as “the man of the moment” by Armin van Buuren, a name like Tom Colontonio does not go unnoticed, but his music, is simply unforgettable. Tom Colontonio belongs to a successful new breed of DJ/Producers who have taken the scene by storm, and are giving the established globally acclaimed artists a run for their money.
We caught up with Tom for a small chat.
Hi Tom, we really appreciate your time for this interview. Your wife Danielle has some of the most entertaining statuses on facebook, she is definitely loving her life as a DJ's wife. How have you and her been doing?
Things have been great. We just got back form a great gig in New York with Giuseppe Ottaviani... amazing time!
Being a Guitar player from the age of 11, what is your take on the Sunlounger project by DJ Shah, could we see maybe your trance influence leaning towards the guitar direction and who would some of your favourites guitar legends be?
I have always been a fan of Shah and really enjoy what he does. My fav guitar player of all time would have to be Steve Vai... he's simply amazing!
You have played alongside names like Andy Moor, Cosmic Gate, Sean Tyas and many more, what would be the most memorable location you have spun at?
That would be the Sunrise festival in Poland last year. It was on the day of my birthday and I was standing in front of all those people having the time of my life.
Through your busy weekly schedules, are there any of the trance radio shows you manage to follow?
I always try and listen to several shows including Paul van Dyk's Vonyc Sessions, Trance Arund The World, A State Of Trance, Subculture, the Sean Tyas podcast and many more. Whatever I can jam into my ipod touch...
Favourite Food?
Sushi!
Being a Producer and a DJ, having a critical and knowledgeable mind on the genre, are there any producers you expect BIG things from this 2009?
I would say Heatbeat for sure. They have been making some great tunes lately!
Recently a problem with a flight had the guys at Luminosity ask Leon Bolier to fill in for you, care to maybe give us a brief story on the unfortunate incident? (Did you beat up any pilots?)
I was in the plane and some problem happened before takeoff. We were sitting there for almost 2 hours before they were gonna move us to a 2nd plane. they decided to go back to the terminal and we all offboarded the jet. After about 3 hours of them telling us we would be leaving soon they just flat out cancelled the flight. I was furious to say the least... Delta airlines is the worst!
2008, looking back through it, what would some of your personal favourite tunes be?
Tyas & Patterson - Something's Uup, Akesson - Perfect Blue, Activa - Rise above, JOC - New Jersey to name a few.
Generally Interviews have a similar question direction, is there any question you are completely tired of being asked... and would you mind answering it for us Tongue out?
Haha! Hmm, the ever popular "Why did you start DJ'ing" question.
Becasue it looked like fun!
Is there any producer or vocalist you have met that made you in your mind go "Wow! I'm meeting her/him"?
Yeah, definitely Paul van Dyk and Armin and a few others too. It can be surreal at times when I think about the fact that I wasnt doing anything like I am now a few years back.
In my recent interviews with female vocalists and producers, I have been failing miserably in my attempts to gain a mobile number of theirs. Do you perhaps have any tips for me?
Yes, tell them you're a fix it man and a hairdresser!
Our final question, what could the fans expect from you this 2009?
Several new collabs with JOC, Activa, Giuseppe Ottaviani and more. More eps and tracks! Many!
