Is every day becoming a new low?

Postby A-Cube » Thu Sep 04, 2008 3:14 pm

I have a 30-minute lunch break and yet I just had to spend it writing this...

The Lebanese scene is by far the most active in the region...events, parties, raves just name it we have it...but it seems that the last year we are witnessing an unprecedented decadence...event-wise, music-wise, legally-wise...

event-wise: 3 or 4 years ago we would all have been jumping in the joy if we knew Tiesto or Paul Van Dyk are coming...3 years later we don't bother reading the flyer when we hear about those names...a lot more DJs came but for some reason you can feel that there are no freshness...we have been welcoming DJs in a repetitive manner for quite a few years now...the buzz is gone...and you may bring Sven Vath or Steve Bug or any other name we will be witnessing for the first time...I really don't think that will make our scene better...dullness and repetition killed the vibe for most of us...of course every now and then you get that one gig that aurally pleases you but you get frustrated by many more gigs that will follow...you can also blame it on the lack of clubs...Basement and B018 are doing the best they can to bring some new names but what's the point...a lot of the clientele of these 2 clubs go there simply to take pictures and drink...could it be the music?? could be...but enough talking about international names...after all we people mostly get to hear the local DJs spin...and talking about the local DJs...is everyone today one? it's like everyday a new name pops out in a new place announcing a massive event or an exclusive residency in a Gemmayzeh pub that can contain up to 37 person standing...everyone is trying to burn stages and try to reach the top with no regards to the music or in a matter of fact basic DJing skills...nowadays technology has made everything accessible...one tutorial on a free site and BAM some kid considers himself a decent disc-jockey...FUCK.YOU. I'm not only talking about myself when I say that a lot of the DJs out there exhausted themselves learning about the music and what it takes to be tagged a DJ and shit...we still have loads to learn...I like to browse facebook every once in a while and just see what kind of fan groups that are out there...and a couple of days ago I lost count...it's plain ridiculous...whether it is the music or even on a more basic level, the name and look...every one started awkwardly but it seems it's getting weirder...DJ names are getting more and more associated with drugs (lovely image just what electronic music needs) and a lot of other things we don't need to mention here...kids basically fooling around a 500-pioneer mixer desperate for some attention...and the horde of class-mates who haven't reached puberty yet following them blindly...ridiculous isn't it?

Music-wise: this point can start and NEVER end...I can understand that radio and commercial tunes get critically over-played in night clubs but for the love of Zeus take it easy in the events...how many times do you hear Infinity during one night?? exactly...people are browsing less and less for quality music...which makes this decadence even more dangerous...last summer witnessed the Rise Up revolution...this summer it's the Infinity rage...promising signs for next year...very much...people who want to hear good music stay at home and listen to internet radio shows hoping to get a glimpse of a tune they love or wait for this one DJ to come once a year and hit the crowd with a quality set...it is up to the local DJs to live up to the standards...but do they? oh hell no...Infinity (Glace remix) (PS yeah it's not Klaas it's Glace) makes the crowd on fire...get over it...I really think if you compare the sets played by some people at the beginning of the summer till now you will see no difference in the tracks that are played...it's like a copy/paste...the only reliable DJs are from mix FM, NRJ and Radio One who really try their best to produce a new and fresh set every week (yes guys I didn't forget you :P )...what is the solution??it's not like you can take a gun and shove it in people's heads to make them listen to the music...it's anchored in the mentality which is practically impossible to change...

Legally-wise: Need I commenting on this point? we all see what kind of crowd is out there and what kind of attitude they use...you can ban them form your nights...but will you break even?? certainly not...the real listeners are at home avoiding those 10-year old who are hornier than a cat in February...apparently there is no more drinking-age here and drug consuming is well...at an all-time high and will keep rising...this the quality of the crowd that will be haunting our nights for a long time now...and you also have on the other hand the show-offs who attend nights just to get their picture in a magazine...those people are worse than the horny rabbits because their laziness kills the vibe for everyone around them...it's like a football game with a public in ties...no excitement whatsoever...it's a major turn-off for the DJ...I don't see laws getting applied anytime soon unfortunately...government seems to be getting its share of the profit and what if 1000's of kids are drinking illegally??as long as we get our share of the profit...and we keep wondering what makes this country so great...

I'm sure many of you will not get half-way through this piece because a lot that has been written here has been previously discussed...but I would love to get your real prediction on how the scene will become...do you agree with me that the decadence will remain or are you more optimistic and say no...it might just work...for so many times I keep telling myself is it worth it?? I can totally confirm to you NO...I have much more important things in my life myself but somehow electronic music has become more than just a hobby...I cannot throw it all away...but if things keep on getting nastier...ah well...we might just give up...

Sorry for the long piece...but I had some free time :P

Welcome to DJ.Malaria you may wonder why I called this group Dj Malaria.

THANK YOU!!!!

Totally agree with every bit of frustration you let out.
I am still musically insatiable as ever! But it's been a really long time since i been to any rave or club at all... I just couldn't give a rat's ass any more... Why bother?
I got the music i want right here. I can hear it whenever i want, without some sticky, icky delirious dude trying to rub onto me!... And i think it's the same for all true music lovers out there...
And there's A BIG DIFFERENCE between a music lover, a party animal with a musical taste, and just jumping freaks.

Where are we going?
I guess it's just gonna even itself out. The kids aren't gonna sustain the profit of the weekly events.. Organizers will have to stop eventually when 20 or so show up at an event these days.... (Hope it happens before it gives the quality DJs the wrong idea about lebanese clubbers)... And then i guess they'll either try to think of something more decent to attract the earlier type of crowd again.... or they're simply gonna dive into the old game once again, a never ending loop.......

Till then... I am quitting partying, till either Armin or Leon show up! :P

Well the pessimism is all over the topic but that was predictable...we all share the same vision of a scene that was promised to be one of the best...

Roonaldo87 take it easy on DonSerj...after all he does admit that he was too young to be there...and yes February is mating season in the cats' world  ...

And DonSerj glad you liked the article...

And to put the cherry on top here are a few of my discoveries on facebook...just to prove what we are currently dealing with...I added the group description here too:

C & X

Cocaine : Elie Mattar [ 12-08-1992 ]
Nationality : Lebanese

Xtc : Joey Akl [ 19-10-1991 ]
Nationality : Lebanese-American

Style : Electro-House and Progressive Trance

Childhood Friends , only the distance separated them. Elie ( Cocaine ) lived in Sahel-Alma while Joey ( Xtc ) lived in Rabieh but Joey's Aunt had an apartment next to Elie's House and they became best friends.

Boosted by the Love and Encouragement of their friends in Sahel-Alma , they embarked on their musical career with the help of their Mentor , DJ Montana. For long hours and days they practiced, to master this art of music until that moment when they discovered the talent within them and worked to unleash it in front of the raving crowd.

They DJed in several small pubs and clubs before hitting the big scene at ~ AYAM ~

23 - 08 - 2008 : A Night Never To Forget !!

Prepared to the fullest , C & X hit the clubbers with their base-pumping hits and heart-thumping melodies to give them a night that They ( The Clubbers ) ,Elie ,and Joey would never forget in their lives as this was the night that made them what they are right now !

Name: Elie A. Sakr
Nationality: Lebanese
Genre: Underground - HardStyle E - DeepHouse - Psychadelic.

History:
Since childhood, DJ Alpha has had an obsession with music. As an R'N'B DJ, he became the resident DJ at a small pub (QBall). People slowly started to take notice of him. Later on, he moved on to a completely different genre of music (Old-School Techno .. House). After months of hard work, DJ Alpha produced a few originals such as [Life Goes On]. He soon realized that people are constantly asking him to play at their clubs. His reputation grew and grew as he completed his first album [I Really Love To Turn You On]. That's when he decided to move on into a more complex type of Electronic Music: Underground, DeepHouse , and Psychadelic.

Am I bashing those people?? Oh hell yeah...Go crazy guys...have a good laugh and look how despicable this situation has become...

Some of these stories are like a pink version of Romeo and Julio...others have already produced albums and are now looking to discover an edgier sound...and some just want to get laid...

Pathetic...

Well, I don't know about mating seasons for cats but I do know that what you
typed is right and I was actually thinking about it a few days ago.

I'm a bit too tired to lash a lengthy response out but here's a bottom line:
What you have in Lebanon will fade out eventually. It's just a fad, a fashion,
or more of a ''jal2a'' for the meantime. Eventually, kids will find a new hobby
or grow out of it, or simply find a new kind of music will get popular and
they'll run after being there for it (or the ultimate obvious solution: get
laid)

What hardcores for EDM can do is lock up and be patient. Don't turn your
backs on the music yet. It's in the lebanese nature to abuse something and
eventually saturate everyone in the country with it to make the cash out of
it.

I've been in Europe for 5 years and never have I flicked the radio and got a
dance tune at lunch time or among other popish shows. DJs here come and
play in clubs and you wouldn't know if you don't see the flyer on some dingy
wall in the neighborhood: no ads on TV or radio or whatever - which is the
way it should be. I've been saying this for years: stop popularizing EDM
because it's not large-masses material... I guess it's late now.

No offense, but I'm glad I'm not in Lebanon putting up with this. If I was
though, I'd stay in my room and blast my stereo to pieces.

Been listening to EDM for almost 10 years now - never have I seen it reach
such a record low in Lebanon.
If your trance was a pretty blonde ballerina; then what I listen to is a peed-off bulky bouncer pounding the living shit out of your ballerina.

I'm sorry if it sounded like a personal attack or something, it wasn't against DonSerj or anything, I meant in general. No personal criticism or anything of the kind.

i have good news and bad news: the scene in lebanon sucks balls and everyone should stay inside and go to Club Farsheh: better music and I'm MUCH more fun to hang out with by myself than 1% of those i would bump into in a lebanese night out.
the bad news: its EVERYWHERE. I complain in Istanbul about the same shit, friends in London stopped clubbing, friends who went regularly to Ibiza even complained.
The bottom line, the scene (in every genre) has gone so mainstream and so public that everyone wants a part of it, diluting the specialness, the brotherhood of secret special nights out.
and EM, instead of being the fine cuisine of music nights out has become a McDonalds drive thru, with the cheap crowd to go along with the cheap nights. at least i'm lucky, old and done all the clubbing i really wanted all over the place. I now retired and have been to a club once in last 2months. and i think besides going to see James Holden, Or Zabiela, or a nostalgic night out with old friends, i'm done clubbing!!! Good luck to you all.

"I hate DJs"--best tshirt i ever owned
Are you ready to go on a musical trip with me, through love...happiness...music....AND PARTY TIME?

Anw, yeah they are fucking up the scene and the dignity of the music, and this is all ''cause of our fucked up government.
But we really shouldn't give up!

One phrase resumes it all and Gen said it...the music is not large-masses material...and unfortunately it's getting used and abused...but I'm surprised to see it's an international phenomenon...ah well I think every kind of music gets its decade of glory before vanishing a little bit somehow...the 80's witnessed ah well...the 80's music :P ...90's was the pop revolution...I think the 2000's so far are electronic music year...in 2010 I wonder what genre will be the newest smash...let's face it...the music will not remain so mainstream-oriented...eventually when big DJs will stop releasing DvDs of them going to the crapper and Ministry Of Sound stop releasing a compilation for every holiday and country we might just see an improvement...until then Club Farsheh remains the best place to rave...
