Trance's evolution without vocals?

Well as many know, dance music in the past included a lot of vocals and later on this very genre of dance music evolved into electronic dance music. Of course under EDM we've got House, Trance, Breaks...etc.

But since this is a trance music oriented forum, I'd like to know your opinions about this:

"Do you think if vocals were removed after the era of dance music into the evolution of EDM, specifically TRANCE (leaving this sub-genre to be instrumental), it would still be big? Would it have evolved more into what it is right now? And what would it die out or continue to grow?"

i dont think vocals would affect trance dramatically.. for me vocals are just a part of trance, an important indeed but not mandatory..
The majority of trance productions are instrumental and this will always stay what differentiate EDM in general from other styles BUT i think it wouldnt have this HUGE impact on the style's evolution..

Vocals are optional in Trance, but music itself is a must, of course. In other words, Trance music will never be affected, imo, by the removal of vocals.

^ Personally i never was a great fan of lyrics. That doesn't mean that i don't like what i hear in trance songs about love friendship peace respect, the good things. I prefer listening to the melodies, when i first started listening to trance on www.mp3.com i enjoyed it so much cuz i could focus my ears on the music itself.
I like a lot the vocal trance songs but i love much more tracks without lyrics. As for those like Super8 & DJ Tab - Helsinki Scorchin', Sensorica vs Jin Key - Only One (Rave Mix) or Andy Moor vs Orkidea - YearZero, then that's what i love too! :D

Night: yea, most of the time it's the sauce that makes the main dish tastier

Honestly, I think vocals are part of the reason why trance has evolved. Without vocals, people who are only into instruments would still listen to it, meaning there will be much fewer fans of this very subgenre. Without vocals, ASOT and many similar radio shows wouldn't be big. Without vocals, Tiesto wouldn't be big. The new comers to trance music listen to mostly vocal music. Of course they realise later on that trance music is a lot better than being just a trance song. But in my opinion, vocals and trance together promoted the scene big time! Without vocals, Andy Moor's productions would've sounded almost dull. His fellow followers would go nowhere with their music too. I Think that vocals play a major role when it comes to the direction trance music is going. They're so essential that trance would've been in a totally different dimension!!
In fact, trance would have diminished and electro/filthy basslined tech-trance would take over completely!!! The proportionity of vocal tracks to instrumental ones has no relevancy whatsoever to what this topic is about.

The voice of a person is also a great catalyst when it comes to creativity in a melody and whatnot. Imagine Above & Beyond's productions without vocals.... A good number of their music is with vocals. If it weren't for vocals, tons of artists wouldn't have made it to where they are right now. To make things more clear for you here's a good example: Yanni, the musician, where is he now? A guy who can't even read musical notes! Sure he had brilliant music which I'm in love with but he must've ran out of ideas. Coming up with a good melody isn't as easy as everyone thinks it is, especially when MOST producers out there don't even know what musical notes are; but getting someone to sing for you while writing that melody is a hell lot easier. And no! Knowing the keys of tracks isn't included. Most people who know the keys got it through being DJ's! What? So every person who wants to be able to recognize musical keys has to go through that trend? I don't think so!

The way I'm thinking about it is not simply imagining things without vocals right now only, but also if it were taken away a decade ago! I'm assuming many people here are thinking about it as if it suddenly happened, hence inducing the thought of "nah no way it wouldn't work".

So my take on this one is: Vocals are they keyfactor to where trance has headed so far and where it will be soon.

Vocals can never be eliminated from any musical genre. They're not essnetial but they add value if done right (a point which was thoroughly discussed in a previous topic). Conversely, they diminish value if they, well, suck. I don't see Trance existing without any vocal use in the future, though if by any chance that does indeed occur, it wouldn't alter my taste in Trance - it's the instrumentality of Trance that ranks it at the very top of my genre list, not the vocals.
