Very nice Topic Genesis, and im surprised we haven't discussed such topic before at TH
Well, i don't know where to begin really... i guess my first real exposure to EDM was as early as 1997 (can't believe its almost a decade now). It was my first RAVE experience ever. I was in Highschool at the time, and my GF and some kids suggested we go and check out one of those (Trendy, Underground Wherehouse "Techno" events). At the time EDM was so underground in the US, and getting to a RAVE was always a hastle, and once u do.. odds are it will be busted by the Cops within a few hours (Before the incorporation era). the Event had two seperate rooms as far as i recall, the main room had some type of music that i categorized as "Techno" at the time (any music with repeptitive sounds was techno to me). I hung around for a while fascinated by whats around me at first, then felt out of place, and didn't really get into the music. Alcohol was not available which added insult to my injury. Soon after, my GF suggested that i get into the "mix". When i inquired about what she meant? she said that "Candy Flipping" will help brake the ice for me, if not make me have the time of my life. So i was like f@#$ it bring it on. So she brought me a Mitsubishi pill and 2 tabs of LSD. 20 minutes later, she suggested we change the room.... and wallaa stuff starts to kick in... and im the JUNGLE ROOM. what can i say... lol... Drum beats, and heavy bass shaking the room... all kinds of brake dancers, poppers and lockers, and on top of that a Carribean Style MC right in the middle of the crowd pumping it up. Felt like a lala land amusement park.. that i never wanted to leave! The Dancing part was what caught me the most, and i spent most of my time practicing on Jump-up/Reggae Bass.
Needless to say, we speant the rest of the summer, with nothing on mind by try score the next RAVE event. Spent the next two years listening to Jungle, along with my Hip-hop.
Then came 1999... it is the year when i first listened to the GATECRASHER, and TRANCE just hit me! i was in the Uplifting/Melodic trance golden age. Needless to say, i was swept by the emotions it brought like no other type of music. Tell u the truth, no matter what people say about mainstream Trance or whatnot. Although i kindda grew out of it, im FOREVER gratefull at the way it touched my SOUL like no other type of music did.
i'd say the year 2002 was the peak of my trance maturing, when i realized my dreams of first attending Dance Valley (woodstock of EDM) and going to Ibiza, Amsterdam. @2003-2005 i kindda grew out of mainstream Trance, and got more into Neo-Jungle (a.k.a DnB), and Hardcore, Gabber, House, and even psy in the past few months.
as for finally finding a sound... i'm not sure i did. I'm not sure its possible, or even if it was.... i'm not sure it would be wise to do so. Music changes, people (including me of course) change, tastes change. I believe if i ever finally make it someday to GOA, the experience might be overwhelming enough to make me do some alternations to my "sound".
I'm not too worried about realizing that though, its good to have something to look forward to
