It is impossible for me to briefly express my mind on this issue, so here is my elaborate opinion on the matter:
Tiesto the producer:
Tiesto is, overall, a good producer (with the exception of some tracks that I personally disliked but that million others loved). He is one of the pioneers of Trance, and his current sound is not at all outdated or cliche; it is by no means "cheesy", and like any other music producers out there from all genres, some people love his work while others don't. However, I do not consider him as the best producer today; he's just another name in the list of producers I like.
Tiesto the DJ:
Although I'm not at all into livesets, but the few Tiesto tracklists I layed my eyes on didn't disappoint me. As for his compilations, they happen to be some of the finest Trance compilations out there, from Magik to ISOS, and they're some of the few compilations that serve as perfect introductions to Trance for the newbie. And I highly doubt that someone who has been deejaying for, what, twenty years, does constant trainwrecks... Still, I do not consider him as the #1 DJ in the world, for the simple fact that I don't care much about rankings; I just care about music, and whoever delivers quality music to my ears, whether it is Tiesto or my cousin's neighbour, wins my vote. There is no such thing as "the greatest DJ in the world" anyway! There are different music genres and leading DJs for each genre that define the sound and spread it to the masses. Take a smaller scale: compare AMADEUS and maDJam - who is better? Neither one! AMADEUS is spreading the true Trance sound in Lebanon, and maDJam is doing the same but for House. Equally, Tiesto is no better than Sasha nor Carl Cox nor John Fleming (he is way better than Genesis though... die Irish pig!

).
Tiesto the celebrity:
This is perhaps the one point where I come at odds with Tiesto fans. I am not against Trance gaining more popularity, but I am against Trance completely moving out of its underground lair into the commercial mainstream. Perhaps only those who, like me, who have accompanied Trance since its very early days will understand my point here. When we started listening to Trance, no one had even heard of this kind of music, perhaps not even Tiesto's current manager. We were a "rare species", and our love for Trance was simply love for this magical music. In contrast, a new wave of trancers are emerging today, two different types of trancers actually: those who, like us in our early days, are exploring this music that is new to them with such passion, and others who actually "listen to Tiesto and not to Trance" because he is all they know, and anything that doesn't "Tiesto" written all over it is considered crap by these people; trust me, I've seen them, and they're numerous, and I made them listen to several quality tracks, and if it wasn't Tiesto they would'nt even care to give it a listen, and when I made them hear a low-quality track produced by an amateur friend of mine who is just learning how to produce and told them that it was made by Tiesto, they loved it and snatched the CD out of my hands! My problem is not at all with Tiesto - it is with these musical ignorants who do not even deserve to listen to Tiesto's music. And I repeat - they are numerous.
None of you should rationally label Tiesto's productions as "cheese"; they might not appeal to your taste, but keep in mind that an Armin release that makes thousands of clubbers weap may equally not appeal to your taste either, but you never call Armin cheesy do you?
No one can say that Tiesto is a bad DJ - he constantly plays pre-releases, mixes them like any other DJ does, and sends you home with a smile on your face (most of you at least).
As for Tiesto the celebrity, I understand that we might not want Trance to go so mainstream, but it's not Tiesto's fault if some of his fans are harming the scene by causing it to over-grow.
In sum,
