I've told this story a countless number of times, a lot of which right here on TH, but ah well, here it goes...
I started listening to Jean-Michel Jarre before I was born; my elder brother used to play me his music when I was still in the belly. I grew up listening to nothing but JMJ and since an early age I was repelled by "radio music". But that changed when I discovered what was formerly known as Radio DeeJay, the station that hosted Lebanon's top DJs (among which were Amadeus and current MixFM owner Rodge who was my #1), and I used to tune in to its shows that delivered what I then termed "House", namely the likes of Mr. Vain, Rhythm Is A Dancer, and tracks by 2 Unlimited among others. Meanwhile I was still listening to JMJ, and when the days of that House were over I went back to JMJ alone, until...
Until in 1999, I was heading to watch a movie with a friend of mine who listened to Techno, Hardcore, DnB, and some Goa, which then was music I absolutely hate. He had that MP3 player at the time called "Rio", and after buying the tickets for the movie he handed the Rio to me and said "listen". I was like "fuck off, I fucking hate your fucking music fuckface" (shut up, we've all had that phase in our life), but he was like "no, this is different, this is Trance, give it a try", and I was like "fine..." (just to get him off my back). I pressed play and a typical 4/4 beat kicked in, so I was thinking "trance shamnce... all this shit sounds the same"... but that was only until the breakdown came in, and the melody was introduced, that of...
William Orbit - Samuel Barber's Adagio For Strings (Ferry Corsten remix)
That was it. I was blown away. As soon as the track was over I simply repeated it. We walked in the theatre and I was still repeating it. The entire movie played on and I was still incessantly repeating it for two full hours. This is the moment that my entire life flipped 180... I still listen to JMJ up til this very day (and any good music for that matter), but ever since that incident Trance became my obsession, a pathological obsession even.
It's just a shame that I'd have to kill the man who got me into Trance after Dolphina's story...
