DJs' Track Selections

Postby Genesis » Fri Dec 23, 2005 4:08 pm

ok.. i've been checkin some tracklists lately.. mainly of ASOT and those u
boys listen to, the gigs that were held lately and i found the results a reason
to finally debate on this issue that i did mention briefly to Bxtreme on msn
a few nights ago.

I'm not accusing anybody of having limited choice of artists and DJs to
listen to their productions/sets.. my point would be more about what those
DJs are spining rather than what you are listening to (at least for a start).

Above & Beyond
Andy Moor
Armin Van Buuren

is there a tracklist that doesn't have releases for those?
yes, i totally understand: they are among the top producers of the scene
(if not the top indeed for u all) but still, the choice is getting largely
narrowed down to those names.. plus that DJs would spin mostly their own
tunes:

8 AvB tunes in his gig (plus at least 2 in every ASOT, not mentioning the
Anjunabeats and Armada releases), 11 tunes of Tiesto's in his gig, 5 tunes
at Andy Moor and Thrillseekers sets (though the sets were short), 15 tunes
of ferry corsten at his gig plus 2 Andy Moor, plus that the choice of prog
tunes was also similar... and not forgetting to mention PvD with all the
PvD, Second Sun, NU NRG, and Vandit releases..

again, yes i understand: every DJ wants to promote himself, wants to
play his own tunes because:

1- it makes people like them, buy them, and makes more money for the
DJ
2- because those tunes perfectly reflect his own sound - which is the
point from having so many DJs/producers anyway.

however that sound is till largely similar (appart from Corsten if i may say)
i can't find a DJ with a ''diverse sound'' that could bring something new to
this trance that u all listen to.

have those DJs become copy cats? ... damn... it's become worse than psy
one single sound for everybody:

if he warms up with prog, he peaks with tech..
if he plays tech, he throws in some melodic
if he plays melody, he throws in some uplifting
if he peaks with tech, he warms up with soft prog

Tech, Melodic, Uplifting, and Prog... that's the cycle and including specific
names... could anybody from those u all die for not spin for those DJs?
and if he did - not narrow down for a few productions by those specific
artists?

I'll start by admitting that every DJ has a different sound, but the least I
can include to that: is that they all have the same cross point in their sounds:

1- play their own/record label tunes
2- same names and tunes just popping up in every single set they spin.

has it become promotions/ads for their own tunes? is this another approach
to make more money by spining it over and over and over..

i mean, i'll take another DJ as a example... John 00 Fleming is a producer
as well as a DJ. he doesn't play his tunes.. if he plays any of them he plays
the latest, or an unreleased remix.. u can't find more than ONE tune having
his name (or JooF Recordings if I may add) in a set no matter how long it
gets..

what happened to the ID? I didn't find a lot of IDs in the tracklists
of those that played for u this year... there was yes, but how many? 5 out
of 30? armin's set was all cracked.. only ONE ID that u guys failed to
know.. everybody knew everything.. (and no - it's not a proof how
updated u are :p) where is the speciality? where's the tunes that stops
everybody: ''what the hell is that?'' and if found, how often is that?

It takes me alot of time to crack J00F's set (i'm taking him as an example
because he's the one i mainly listen to his sets) and I could never crack
it completely despite how up-to-date i am with whatever he spins and
whatever gets released... he likes some producers yea.. Astrix, Wizzy Noise,
and some others but there's ''diversity'': forward-thinking music, a blend
of prog-house, prog-trance, prog-psy, and full-on psy..
yes, u do have a blend as well... but that blend is sort of similar everywhere,
i don't want to compare it to psy, but psy can be very diverse, and only
DJs with a controversial sound like J00F can well demonstrate that.

oh and please, don't use Infected Mushroomo or other live performers as
an example of DJs who only spin their own tunes (and i personally find this
as their only turn off) because you can't perform other people's tunes live
and besides, all their tunes are being remastered live, so it's not like
spinning a friggin record..

the question is: does anybody share the same view?

(although I'm sure the majority don't but I just wanted to share what I
noticed and see what the others will say in return to probably flip my
judgement to a happy normal human Zion)

i kindda get what u are saying, especially for veteran "Trance addicts". It does limit your possibilities. On the other hand, even for a veteran trancer, if someone is into Armada, corsten etc.. it doesn't mean that they don't listen to sets by other DJs, or underground ones. So i personally don't believe that its entirely true, even for veterans.. unless all what they listen to is what u mentioned.

For me personally, i find that to be very convenient, since the time i spend listening to trance might not be as much as others. So i can spend 2 hours a week.. listening to ASOT and whatever ferry that i get... and i'm good on my weekly dose of trance. Since, im also very keen about other forms of EDM (DnB, Hardcore, Gabber etc..), that i don't wanna waste my time and rather go with DJs whom i trust will always provide me what im seeking.

Yeah, i guess im getting a better understanding of what u trying to say. I don't know what draws veterans to what u mentioned really. Maybe, people are drawn more to DJs with track lists that fit their mood, style.. more than they are drawn to ones that introduce them to new tracks? Or, maybe people just expect to be introduced to less newer tracks and are ok with that, cause they are more updated? I can't say really, when it comes to trance.. cause im not too updated. And to the other less popular genres like DnB for example, problem rarely occurs. Cause its quite underground.. and the variety of style of DJs is extremely huge.

Very interesting point though Genesis... and i think maybe other fellow TH'rs might have a wide of variety of answers to that.

first we need to clarify one thing..

PvD
Tiesto
Armin

all of them when they came to play they were promoting their albums.. so their overplay of their own production is somehow expected.. as for Ferry, well he's always known to play many of his tracks (especially if he go somewhere for the first time..)

another point is that most of these DJs are producers and DJs so they get to promote their tracks and understandably they would prefere their own productions over anybody else, then would come their record label's tracks for the same reason..

now is this the right thing to do?! i think we should look at it from 2 point of views, for DJs who comes to perform seldom in some countries it would be expected to play many of their own productions as the gigs would tend to be like an artist performance of any other musical style. But if DJs are getting to play often then yes, this somehow gets to be repetitive and wouldn't be THAT satisfactory for uptodate trancers/clubbers..

one thing to note though, i guess the internet (checking livesets) and radio shows (like ASOT) are also an important factor in making it harder to find many important IDs (as i think quality music never comes in large quantities..)

in conclusion, i think what you're trying to reach Gen is somehow a perfect goal in clubbing experience.. i dont think it'll easily be happening but i hear you my friend and i do hope your wish would be more and more realised!
