In this new series we’re going to look at a variety of different DJ ‘tricks’. This isn’t a ‘learn to beatmix’ or ‘learn to scratch’ series for beginners, instead it’s aimed at those DJs who’ve mastered the basics and want to add a few extra skills to their arsenal, whether that’s fancy scratches or impressive rewinds.
To kick off the series we’re going to look at quite a simple scratch, the Uzi. Before we start, though, you’ll need to know at least how to do the Baby Scratch and the Scribble. If you’ve new to scratching, though, don’t panic! The Baby Scratch is dead simple.
Find the start of the sound you want to scratch with (a kickdrum, single word of vocal or horn stab works well), with your hand at 9 o’clock on the record just as if you were cueing up normally. Now move the record back and forth, ‘playing’ the sound (but never taking your finger off the record and just letting it play – you’re pushing the record with your hand) and rewinding back over it.
