James FUCKING Holden. Why? One reason only:
Balance 005. Go listen to it. The tracks are mostly from 2003-2004 but I bet you if you plug it in today the sounds are as fresh as whatever you downloaded last week! He's beyond genius in terms of music: a Math degree from Oxford and he's still playing sounds that no one else makes---thsi is what I love about him: in a world where MP3s are sent, downloaded, bought and shared at 300mph, his livesets are filled with tracks no one ever heard before.
Before that he made "Fear of a Silver Planet 1" in 2001 which is such a pure class debut album its ridiculous.
2. Hawtin: a very close 2nd place for me. His innovations and technological wizardry makes him so much fun--i've seen him a good 5-6times this decade and once in the 90s. He never fails to impress.
As for trance, considering the early 2000s and the middle, you gotta give it to PVD.
My list for 3rd place has plenty of people with Sasha/Diggers/Warren/Cattaneo/etc
