There's no point in differentiating sub-genres.
Everything is worth a listen, at least once. You also don't really have to
narrow down artists and their productions to a certain sub-genre. Artists'
production changes over night with all the influences that they acquire or
even mood.
Who cares? Plug and play - you either like what you listen to or you don't.
I understand the need to nourish your knowledge - and I pretty much
can't help with giving examples for artist names due to my limited
knowledge of non-psy artists and their work.
The way I look at it? (if you're really looking for subs)
- Ambient Trance
- Progressive Trance
- Uplifting Trance
- Tech Trance
- Psychedelic/Goa Trance (they are now regarded as one gendre: no
need to split between them)
- Hard Trance
Vocal, Acid, Electro and Prog-psy have blended into the subs that I
mentioned - they don't really exist individually under the 'Trance' slogan
anymore: they are influences on the tune structure rather than a style
itself. Any Trance tune can be vocal as long as it got lyrics, but that
doesn't mean it's not uplifting anymore or psychedelic or anything else
that it is of which that element is the most influencing part in structuring
the tune and therefore - lays it down in the desired sub-genre.
If you really want to go into a sub-genre discussion then you're giving
yourself a migraine for what is not really that much of a deal.
The funnier part is that every sub-genre of those has its subs and trust
me on this: you don't want to go into them.
Psytrance for instance has become a whole genre of its own: prog-psy,
morning psy, full-on psy, trippy psy, and dark psy. Now, consider all this
diversity applied to all the subs that you listen: that's a lot of subs within
the subs.
If you're still up for classifying them: then keep on listening to trance, and
the more your ears get trained and used to the sounds, the easier they
will get clearer to you and easier to spot for your ears and eventually
every tune would fall into its own genre with least effort from you.
If your trance was a pretty blonde ballerina; then what I listen to is a peed-off bulky bouncer pounding the living shit out of your ballerina.
