With the original already released late last year after receiving massive support from all the top jocks, this epic vocal trancer gets yet another remake (after Viframa's latest) this time from Dogzilla a.k.a. Simon Paterson, a name we all chanted after his devastating 2004 bomb Your Eyes. Coupled with the original, Dogzilla's "Pure Filth remix" finally receives a long-awaited release on High Contrast after being pounded by every DJ you could think of and even in Tiesto's concert. Enough with the information overload; onto the review!
Ernesto versus Bastian ~ Dark Side Of The Moon [original mix]
A firm kick, echoing percussive drums, and creepy effects jump-start this baby up, layered in such a way that cannot but leave you impatient in anticipation of what is to come. Soon enough, a massive bassline makes its way through and you suddenly feel the structure is complete... then the vocals punch in and you realize that this is where all the magic's at! Haunting vocals on carefully selected lyrics, something quite rare in the Trance industry of late. An instrumental break soon takes place before the vocals make a much-desired comeback, with the chorus just sending shivers down your spine. Somewhere near the 4 minute mark the beat is withdrawn and a vocal bridge paves the way for what is supposed to be the lead melody... just when you thought that the song couldn't possibly get any darker, a breathtaking melody of sharp strings takes your soul even deeper underground and your hands even farther up in the air. When combined with the haunting vocals, the vampirical melody and the deep powerful beat form a crescendo of dark energy that no mortal can resist. Massive, simply massive.
Ernesto versus Bastian ~ Dark Side Of The Moon [Dogzilla's "pure filth" remix]
The remix starts off just as dark and scary; the title says it all anyway - Pure Filth. Dirty beat, rough bassline, filthy elements, and the original melody being hinted through very cleverly in the buildup. The vocals take a while longer to load, and they sound slightly more crisp than the original, matching perfectly with the crazy beat engineered by Dogzilla. A few minutes through and the bridge is brought in before the chorus, stripped from the beat as well, with minimal dreamy notes floating around the foreground, and some very decently layered chords defining the background. The melody finally settles in, just as dark as the original's with an added twist of energy too, but still no sign of the chorus... Climax eventually explodes at the 5:23 mark with all the mindblowing elements operating in sheer harmony: the chaotic beat, the driving bassline, the energetic melody, and even the haunting chorus vocals. Some additional dark strings are soon added on to juice things up even more and cause a couple more casualties on the dancefloor. If you thought the original was a work of art, Dogzilla's remix will reset your standards. Two thumbs up and all hats down.
Proclaimed by many as the vocal release of the year 2004, the original Dark Side Of The Moon was on every trancer's playlist for uninterrupted months. This new remix easily lives up to the weight of the original, trespassing it even. 2005 may still be quarter-way through, but Dogzilla's remix of this epic trancer already echoes the label "vocal release of the year".
