It's been about 6 months since John 00 Fleming released his last triple-cd compilation (Euphoria Psytrance). It was a fantastically done compilation that never failed to impress and left all fans hungry for more.
More has just arrived. Global Trance Grooves: Two Tribes is the first release of a new project that John 00 Fleming and American DJ Christopher Lawrence are working on. More volumes have been promised, but for now; this first release has just seen the light a couple of weeks ago.
J00F and Lawrence have had uncompromising success over in the states whenever they played together: boosted with Lawrence's rapid popularity and J00F's legendary status, they filled out clubs and brought roofs down.
I knew what to expect from John on a CD. I didn't know what to expect from Lawrence as I was never really a dedicated fan.
John kicks off the first CD with a sublime intro and slowly builds up the set going through superb releases that he's been throwing out lately. Deep dark edgy progressive slowly gains momentum for a luscious morning psytrance and moves up to mind-bending full-on psy! Energetic, pumping, tolerably melodic at some times, yet uncompromisingly straight-to-the-point. A very captivating first CD that further identifies John and his sound. Unique, different, magical, and simply addictive - the wizard has done it again. This is pure and sheer CLASS!
Christopher Lawrence takes on the 2nd CD *sigh*. I didn't know what to expect from the man so I kept an open mind and listened to the whole CD although you can always anticipate what the set would sound like at certain times from the very first tune. Lawrence starts his CD with three electro tunes. Confusingly, his then moved on to psy. The transition was unexpected, which in a way is good as it takes you off guard, but on the other hand it simply didn't sound right.
The psy that Lawrence chose for his set is tacky, monotonous, and structureless. If John has set you in the mood in the first CD, Lawrence simply murdered that mood and pissed on its coffin. There are undeniable good moments in Lawrence's set but the general attitude of the set wasn't up to that level.
If John had taken on the two CDs himself, then he would have blown it all out of the water. I'd recommend you buy the CD. John's set is worth the money as he pulled off an absolute cracker. I would've liked it more if he included some more unreleased material of never-heard-before tunes as most of the tunes featured are already out or he's played them on his show but this is not a complaint - the CD was awesome!
