Summer Channel feat. Fisher - A Thousand Miles

Postby crow » Sat May 05, 2007 10:19 pm

Artist: Summer Channel
Label: Libra Rising Music
Original genre: Rock
Remixes genre: EDM (mixed)

Not many would recognize those guys behind the project of Summer Channel, but I do recall a year or so ago I did post a topic about those guys and this particular track that was up on their myspace page only as a sample. I couldn't help but review this beauty as soon as I got my hands on it. Unfortunately Mr. Armin HAD to play it after ONE FUCKING YEAR after realising how great this track is. I suppose His Highness and his crew need more time to recognize such great talents! This isn't a bashing thread though.

Here's a quick intro about the guys:
J. Scott G, the main man behind this project is the one responsible for the flow of ideas around. Quite frankly, it's a surprise to find out that he produced tracks for Sandra Collins, DJ Rap, D:Fuse, and Deepsky and worked on some video games' soundtracks! I'm talking about GRANT TURISMO 4 and SSX3! However, as I mentioned earlier, Scott G is the main person behind the project, which implies the precense of other members too. Cameron Morgan is his guitarist, Rebecca Caseboom and Patrick Scott as vocalists in other tracks by the group.

I'm having a hard time finding more info about this amazing fresh talent but unfortunately the website doesn't provide much info of where he comes from and whatnot. I'm sure time will tell :)

Alright! Here we go with the tracks that came with the release:

Original Album Version is a great rock song with the vocals done by no one other than Fisher. Fisher has been featured with other EDM artists such as Filo & Peri just to refresh your memory. The vocals were very well made and gives a lot of energy to the track itself. The song starts off with Fisher's amazing voice with a dreamy atmosphere in the song that gets you ready for what is ought to be a rocking energy. Great rock track with a lot of EDM influences! There's actually a breakdown in this one!

George Acosta Remix is the BOMB of this release! The track kicks off with a dark bassline with thin kicks that later on roll with a second bassline. After 1:30 minutes, Fisher's voice just gets it all working! Having had a small breakdown to introduce the vocals, the track gets back on its feet with very trancey synths and melodic key strokes in the background. Minute 3 is where a high dosage of trance energy appears produced by those trancey synths. Great breakdown! The pads work very well with Fisher's voice that starts singing the chorus of the whole track while a build-up is introduced. Meanwhile, the synths are back and are being filtered along with the build-up. Love the energy, love the vocals! Definitely a club tune and a single to be heard wherever you are. Only thing in this track is the ending which basically fades out instead of ending it with kicks; thus, making it not so DJ friendly.

LP's Launch Prep Remix is categorized as breakbeat. This remix also has a dark bassline except it's soft and soothing. LP did a great job with the vocals and giving the track the full vocals from the acapella. The breakdown in this remix is much much much better than the original and the George Acosta remix. No buildup tho, just a direct kick-in and the continuation of the vocals along with the broken beats. In comparison to the George Acosta, this one is DJ friendly since it doesn't fade out. So heads up to this one as an intro to a set ;) There should also be a dub mix for this one.

Burfunk Remix leans more to the housey side of EDM with some rock influences here and there. Gladly, the whole acapella was used in this remix. Furthermore, you can easily hear the guitars used in the original appearing in this remix. What I don't get is, the breakdown of every preceding remix is much better than the other. The strings that ring in your ears during the breakdown are beautiful! After a quick hush in the breakdown, the electric guitars are back again along with Fisher's vocals that sort of create a build-up and getting the track to "rock the house".

Joy Remix is a very "summery" house remix. The vocals have been very nicely sliced 'n diced and have been served in a "pan" effect. A recognizable filter effect has been added to the vocals. One great element of this track is the banjo-sounding-strings in the background that float with the vocals for a minute that alter between appearing and disappearing. The bassline is beautifully produced by a bass guitar. No breakdown in this remix though! Pure summer-house tune right here. I can see it now being played at the beaches....

Joy's Instrumental Dub is exactly the same as the remix except that - obviously - it has no vocals.

Just when you thought there weren't anymore trance remixes for this track....

Brian Howe & DJ Cobra Trance Mix is a melodic trancer that fits the summer season too. Great remix with a floating bassline and non-banging kicks. Just like George Acosta's remix, the vocals kick in at minute 1:30 only this time there's a very warm pad that just holds the track together and really adds in a more summery feeling that transitions it into the breakdown. I LIKE! The breakdown is simply relaxing. Do I hear flutes? Wow! Fisher's astonishing voice is beautifully intact with the melodies that build up the breakdown into the next phase of the track. The melodies could have been better though. Warm pads are back again along with the vocals that bring the whole remix to a slow end.

This is a personal recommendation the everyone who's into melodic EDM!
