Sometimes there are these artists that produce one toptrack in their life. Sometimes there are artists that squeeze out ten identical tracks in a year for quick cash-ins. The Auranaut, however, is different. Already busy since the early nineties he has produced tunes for over a decade, including his biggest hit "People Want To Be Needed". His album carries the same title. PWTBN is a fantastic collection of the Auranaut's best tracks and is released on the new label Power Circle Records. A ninetrack album awaits us for a listen.
Hear the rich boy just passing through
Produced in 1994, but for that time a very forwardthinking track. There's a hint of psytrance troughout the whole tune, with eclectic drives and moody sharp synths. The repetitiveness of the sounds presents a hypnotic atmosphere. With the cool vocal samples attached you find yourself a cool, psy-ish track.
Groove on dream off
A fantastic track from 1995. The start is absolutely massive with a cool loop and a dark psytrance bassline giving an energy boost. The tune is then moving to a more moody direction with mind-tripping effects and typical psy-trance acid bleeps. Put in some twisted vocal samples and you find a blasting goa-ish track.
Calm your mind (Darkness before dawn remix)
This tune is more a cross-over between trance and psy-trance with some acid effects. First seconds present a rumbling bassline with flat kicks. The breakdown presents some eastern-sounding vocals and a dreamy pianomelody. The rest of the track pumps through with the vocals and some dreamy strings in the background. The build-up in the tracks is quite strange and confused me a little. Sometimes there are long breaks where hardly anything happens, and suddenly you are crossing through a full on psy-trip. This felt a little too unbalanced for me.
Waking Up
WOOT! This is a fantastic track. Absolutely mesmerizing breakbeat track with a subtle melody. Graham Dear asked the assistance of Dave Ralph here and they present a dreamy, moody breakbeat tune. The vocals in the track are brilliant and fit in perfectly. Just great.
Yo Yo (Club Mix edit)
Massive track, probably second best known track from The Auranaut. Feels like a pumped up version of a Chicane track. Balearic vocal effects are placed onto a pumping bassline with dreamy strings and soulfull melodic effects. A very enjoyable track.
Da Booming
A weird, but inspiring tune. A continuous acidtrancy bassline keeps on rolling for the full 8 minutes surrounded by vague sounds that float gently in the back of the track. Great progressive sounding tune with a marvellous feel.
Yesterday's future (album edit)
One of the better tracks of this album. Sweet floating sounds and a sharp kick work well together combined for a sweet mysterious track. This tune is also quite repetitive, but this is also the catch in the track. When u listen to it, you slowly get involved in the tune, something that doesn't happen quite much nowadays.
People want to be needed
The Auranaut's biggest tune till date probably, hammered by an amazing load of jocks. Punchy beats and bassline with a progressive/trancy feel. The real beauty is the addition of the amazing vocal sample that creates a fantastic deep atmosphere in this track. People want to be needed proves that a track doesn't always need a big hookline to get your crowd mad. Beautiful, exciting track.
Garden Of Peace (auranaut phasers on stun remix)
A strange, experimental track, that hops in between breakbeat and slow drum n bass. A weird combination with trancy sounds and twisted female vocal samples. Personally it did not work for me, because the sounds don't sound great together. Kinda disappointing last track.
Conclusion
A great album for the oldschool trance fans and/or an eye opener for the people that have just recently jumped into this scene. This is great example of the tunes that pioneers like Graham Dear (The Auranaut) created the past decade. It was new and different back then, and they still are now. If you are looking for something different then the usual trance albums coming out now then move your *ss to www.auranaut.com to take a listen and order this album.
