Football transfers ethics

Postby Fawzi » Mon Sep 01, 2008 10:11 pm

This summer, football clubs all around have shown their ethics -lack of it, more precisely, regarding the transfer of players.

Real Madrid have been accused of dirty play by Man Utd regarding Cristiano Ronaldo, who in turn have been accused by Tottenham and have been the subject of an official complaint over their behavior regarding Dimitar Berbatov. Tottenham have also lodged an official complaint against Liverpool for their handling of Robbie Keane, which has retracted later, after the clubs could reach an agreement. Liverpool also came under fire from Aston Villa, with Gareth Barry this time at the eye of the storm. Real Madrid, no stangers to transfer controversies themselves, are now blaming Chelsea of unethical behavior as the Robinho saga goes on, while Arsene Wenger has been attacking every club that compliments one of his young stars.

I could go on and on, but I'm sure you get the picture. Major clubs are furious when other clubs come calling for one of their stars, labelling their tactics as "dirty", "unethical","immoral", "corrupt", etc... but are guilty of the same behaviours.

Their tactic is simple really. Start rumours about a certain player you're interested in. Then deny everything. Let the media go on and on about it, until the player becomes unsettled, and then officially express an interest. The media now goes now in overdrive, talking about the advantages the transfer might have for the player: European football, a fat contract, the start treatment, etc... Come with a low offer to the target club. If rejected, plant more ideas into the player's head until he comes with an official transfer request. He won't play, but he'll still get paid. The only solution for the club now is to offload him and take as much money as you can. Easy.

We have seen this tactic used so many times in the past. Real Madrid are the masters at it, especially under Florentino Perez, although it hasn't worked so far this summer: Man Utd wouldn't budge with Ronaldo , and they are now the target from Chelsea.

So far, this article seems like a slate against clubs. But players are very, very far from being innocent. If your 70000$-a-week contract isn't fat enough to rest your ass on, you can simply ask your agent to work out a deal for you. You choose your club and the appropriate wage. If it doesn't work out, you can simply ask for a new, bigger contract.

They say players today lack in loyalty. But as former player and now manager of Sunderland Roy Keane said, loyalty is a two-way street. Clubs sometimes dump players without asking much questions.

What are your thoughts? Where do you lay the blame on the disgraceful acts that have happened and are still happening this summer? Clubs, players, or agents? Looking forward to your replies.

There aren't anymore ethics in football today it's like a human e-bay...clubs have been treating their players like crap for decades and now the joke is on the clubs...players are getting greedier and play simply for the money unfortunately...some of them are big cry-babies and the moment they have a little feud with the coach they want to leave the club...I can honestly say that it's disgusting and getting out of hand...European football has no more standards...in every league it's 4 clubs who are competing and the rest are simply entertaining them...Robinho has moved to Man City and passed on the CL this year...why?? for more green stuff (not weed...cash :P )...many others are doing the same...the young players are looking to suck life out of their clubs before proving themselves at the highest level (Giovinco, Adebay-whore, and many more)...with transfer prices getting crazier by the year do not be surprised if many clubs go bankrupt or get penalized for illegal approaches on the players (Ashley Cole a few years ago)...there are no more ethics because money is everywhere...and unless some limits are set it will keep getting out of control...dirty tricks are everywhere (how about that Figo story that could have sent his agent to jail??)...everyone is to be blamed because everyone who is involved in football is allowing those things to take place...

I know I went a little bit out of subject but it's simply because those whole issues are related...

One simple solution: PUT A SALARY CAP!!!

At this rate there will be no end...
I mean when Dimitar Berbatov costs 30 million pounds, Robbie Keane 18, Robinho 32 and when Aston Villa ask 18 for Gareth Barry...
No offence to these players, but 3-4 years ago, they would've cost less than half of that

I'm sick and tired of all the money spent on football...fuck now a UAE billionaire buys a team and bids on players for 300 Million Euros in one afternoon...in a couple of years teams will stop investing in youngsters and instead will find a guy with money coming out of his ass to go out and buy them the player they want...

If UEFA want to stop this ridiculous degradation of world wide football they must find a solution ASAP...things got out of hand this weekend and during January it will only get worse...

PS the Bosman treaty is the worst thing that ever happened to football teams...big time...

^I wanted to write about this fuckin rich sheikh!! Compared to him Abramovich is like "very poor"... quite paradoxal isn't it  can you imagine a player like C. Ronaldo (talented, but stupid) to be bought for 230 million euros?!?!?!
Fuck... money ruins everything eventually. And i hope that this fucked up UAE business guy dies ASAP. And yes, that UEFA finds a solution ASAP!
