Psychedelic trance may not be the the coolest or most fashionable sub-genre in dance music, but it’s undoubtedly one of the strongest international underground scenes, and it’s starting to make a big impression across UK dancefloors, with club nights dedicated to the sound appearing in abundance.
Although London has always hosted its fair share of parties, regular nights such as Bristol’s Tribe Of Frog and Sheffield’s Planet Zogg are showing the increasing demand for the sound across the country.
As well as the unsung artists within the underground, DJs like John ‘OO’ Fleming are increasingly championing the sound in their sets, as they strive to move forward from the euphoric trance sound which has dominated in clubs like Gatecrasher and Godskitchen over the years. Meanwhile, events like Antiworld – a 3,000-capacity indoor festival in London – are constantly importing the finest international live acts and DJs psy trance has to offer.
Antiworld’s Psygate room is packed time after time with an unforgettable atmosphere. And with the emergence of this year’s three-day, psy-dominated Glade Festival, it seems that this could be the sound to make the biggest impact we’ve seen in our clubs since the growth of breakbeat a year or two ago.
It was as far back as the mid-’90s that the music was first introduced in the UK, with nights like Return To The Source and Astral Phoenix supplying what was then known as ‘Goa trance’. Their DJs Mark Allen, Tsuyoshi Suzuki and many others took their following on sometimes ambient, sometimes driving trips of musical enlightenment.
Now, with the scene very much in the ascendant once again, we thought it was high time to have a look at some of the leading players that have emerged ten years down the line, from the highly talented Israeli producers who are fast becoming more readily accessible to their UK fanbase, to some of the UK-based artists who’ve been pushing the sound since day one…
