well for as long as i remember i've always witnessed ppl criticizing music and recently with the birth of Trancehits.com more and more critics haven been brought everynow and then..
First, let me make one thing clear: everyone has his own taste and he/she is free to express it. If some differences arise between tastes that doesnt mean one is wrong and the other is right; it's something relative and we are all different in one way or another.
making this intro is essential, especially that we at Trancehits.com would want to help spread our passion (Trance music) widely and want to encourage all DJs/ Producers. As explained earlier, due to our natural differences we have to accept the fact that many productions that might sound appealing to us will sound repelling to others and vice versa!! The thing that made me target this issue now is that many of us mixup between expressing our dislike for a track and labeling it as a bad production. This definitely won't help anyone and would be very disrespectful and unfair especially for the producers who spend so much time and effort in producing music.
Many of us refer to tracks that we dont like as commercial or cheesy whereas the producers themselves would be highly respected (AvB, Tiesto, ATB, Ferry, PvD and many others that created the scene and still help with its growth!) Also, there's a weird and funny labeling for tracks that are somehow new and unique as cheesy production and in the same time accusing the producer of going offlimit and totally against his usual style!! Another funny fact is that, we tend to read many descriptions as BAD, COMMERCIAL, or CHEESY and we rarely read someone saying simply I DONT LIKE IT! or NOT MY STYLE!!
with such examples i'd like to share with you the definition of commercial and cheesy labelings for Trance with my own explanations and i welcome any new additions from you as well.
Commercial: which is the least commonly used label and the easier to distinguish, commercial tracks are ones produced only for generating money! not to mixup with the fact of producers getting well paid of having their tracks as worldwide hits as afterall they do need money to stay alive and finance their productions taking into consideration that success should be praised and never dissed!! I'm referring here to these 3-4 minutes tracks and get so much airplay time on commercial stations having a very predictable structures with a tiny catchy hook every now and then.
Cheesy: is the widely used by mistake to label all tracks that dont appeal to many ppl. In fact cheesy productions should be used to describe tracks that sound so similar to early productions, tracks that offer nothing new and that never adds anything original or interesting to the production scene. cheesy is simply being overused and would be fairly used for the common "Benny Benassi" type of basslines that are used these days by many different producers sounding almost like the same original tracks. Most commercial tracks are Cheesy but it's unfair to use Cheesy for original tracks even if they dont appeal to us.
I've read many descriptions for tracks produced by famous and respectful DJs being labeling them cheesy and commercial which will never help the growth of Trance music nor will support the Producers whom we shout out our utmost respect and admiration!!
If you're still reading that far, it means ur a real trancer and for that i wanna thank you. would love to hear what you guys think about it and thanks again for keeping up with this long post.
Cheers,
