With all the major catastrophes happening lately from earthquakes to volcanic eruptions, do you think the end is near?! beginning of the end? will we even make it to 2012? will we get to see Gen before the world blows into pieces!!??..

Seriously, is it a simple coincidence that all those quakes and eruptions are happening at the same time and in an exponential rate?

What would you do if the end is confirmed and there's nothing that we can do about it?? total chaos?

There're a few scenarios for the end of us. Tectonic and geologic activity is not one of them. In fact, tectonic plate movement and geologic activity is a healthy sign of planetary evolution - active planets are living planets. The worry is if there isn't such activity.

Our death is from one of the following;

1- The Sun will inflate into a stellar category Red Giant class IV and this will make it much hotter and will literally cook the planet. Eventually, the Sun will inflate so much, it'll consume Mercury, Venus, and Earth. It'll then puff out its exterior and what's left behind is an exotic nebula with a White Dwarf star in the middle. This will be the death of whole solar system. But that's not until for a looooooong time from today.

2- Near Earth Objects are an imminent danger. NEOs, comets, and Earth's orbit intersect more frequently than you think. If a substantially large object hits the planet, the planetary winter that follows will pretty much destroy life as we know it. There's hope however as this will trigger an Ice Age and when all the ash settles down; the Sun will still be there and bacteria (among other organisms) would have survived and will jump start life again.

3- Our Electromagnetic Shield is weakening. This is because the core of the Earth is slowing down for reasons we don't know. Historically, this has happened before over regular intervals. When Earth's core stops spinning, the Electromagnetic Field will vanish. When this happens; our protection from Coronal Mass Ejections and Solar Winds is consequently gone and this is bad news... very bad. CMEs and Solar Winds are highly radiative (mainly UV) and will pretty much kill everything. But even this is not the end of the planet; the core will start spinning again in the reverse direction and this will cause the planet to have a Geomagnetic Reversal; North and South will switch. The problem is that between the stop and go of the core's rotation we will be vulnerable to CMEs and that's the trouble.

4- There's also the religious scenario which doesn't convince me. So, I won't go into that...


Of those three scenarios, option 3 is most likely because we are due a Geomagnetic Reversal (last one occurred over 700,000 years ago) and an increase in tectonic and geological activity is an associate of the reversal.

Sorry I had to turn my nerd on, but you asked for it.

Oh, and yes you will get to see me before the Mayan Calendar ends (not that I believe in it to begin with).. If all goes well, I should be visiting between next year and 2012 at the very latest!

^ The only thing that COULD coincide with 2012 is the Geomagnetic Reversal of the poles. This is imminent because it's part of Earth's life cycle but even this has no particular relationship with 2012 as it hasn't started yet and its timeline is around 7000 years - so, we would notice if the shift is happening as all compassing, navigation, electric surges, surface temperature, and radiation levels will go wacko.

Nat Geo and Discovery are flooded with documentaries over 2012 with only the polar shift making any significant case to coincide in 2012. People are writing books over it, making movies... and there's no harm in that because people like such stories but (except for an unlikely Geomagnetic Reversal) it's all pure rubbish.

Just answer this for me: let's say the Mayans were those awesome people that excelled at certain things including futurist cataclysmic predictions. Let's ignore the fact that they (and all Aztec generally) were onboard with human sacrifice for centuries on end and collapsed because of disease epidemics and drought that you couldn't work around.
Now let's come to us; we landed on the moon, split the atom, and cloned cells (among much more). Why would I, an intellectual reason-and-sense driven man, listen to what an extinct cannibalistic civilisation have to say about the future of my planet?

No offence to the Mayans and they might even be right by some bizarre coincidence. But I'll be living my life just fine until (and beyond) 2012.
It's on our nature; we humans just love speculation.

Diablo, of course there's been climate changes before. We are living in one as we speak and we can't stop it; it's part of the planetary cycle. So fair play for them studying past evidence of that and coming to this conclusion but we sort of already know about that... in peculiar detail too. The shift is sudden but it doesn't happen in just one day. You could see it coming over decades but you can't predict it from BC-times with the primitive methods the Mayans had.
And by the way, we have survived catastrophic climate change before, over and over again. Ancient Egyptians survived the drought of North Africa - Africa was booming with greenery - and (better yet) founded history's most influential civilisation in the ancient world. There're far more examples but I'll leave it at that. All what I'm trying to convey is that we humans, from the days of early homo-sapiens some 190,000 years ago (with all their primitivity) down the evolution line until the last catastrophic climate change around 6000 BC that made Africa barren as it is today - the result? Nothing! We lived and actually got better.

So while panic could be forgiven because climate shifts and subsequent ice ages are a major event: it is not, nonetheless, life ending... Not with the intelligence & experience that we humans possess.

As with the alleged planetary alignment, I can't see how the Mayans could ever have observed previous alignments or foresee futurist ones.
I doubt its factual existence to begin with. Particle physics explains energy level fluctuations very clearly and unless the source is a black-spectrum light source (such as the Sun - and stars generally - ), the energy level rise in virtually undetectable - it happens on an ionised and electronic level within the atom and not intergalactic alignment. Earth lies in the outermost region of a very minor spiral arm in our galaxy (Orion Arm). We are over 25,000 LYs away from the very dust & particle-filled galactic centre. We can't even see the galactic disk because of how dense the Intergalactic Medium is.

It's FULL of star. Milky Way is over 13 billion years old. Can you imagine how many stars have been born and dead since (we might not be a young active galaxy anymore, but we're mighty huge as a result of the years of evolution)? And yet you can't see that much of them because they're all tucked in that "cloud"... which is in the way of seeing the galactic centre. It'll take MILLIONS of years for that material to clear out for us (and can only happen if you rearrange the whole galaxy or relocate Earth) to have a chance in being in the firing line of, if any, photons travelling across the galactic centre to reach us at those improbable unrealistic rates of energy.

Bottom line is ... no matter how clever we are , no matter how pyschic we are , no matter how scientifically advanced humans are , we will not be able to predict the future ! It will all come very sudden , and there is nothing we can do about it !

Its good to have knowledge about predictions of future events. However its stupid to make our lives dependent on it and unconsciously convert a prediction to a fact. Predictions are not FACTS and Michel Hayek is not a prophet.

Its ridiculously funny to see people starting a conversation with "Michel Hayek said...." [P.S: You can replace Michel Hayek with any fortune teller i.e Mayans in our case]

Anyways, I cant change others believes so while those worrying about how near the end is I'll be worrying about my next meal, my next GF and what game to play.
