its been ages since I've enjoyed such a heated debate on TH!! AGESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSs.
I used to have this fight with my brother all the time: Me and Beirut in one corner, him and Dubai in the other corner.
Crow, i understand how (as a non-Lebanese) it can get super frustrating when we claim and scream that EVERYTHING about LEbanon is better, we are superior, more open minded better looking, 27inch penises, etc. Its immature. As someone who's lived in 12 cities on planet earth including Beirut (and now Dubai), let me compare the two for you:
Beirut is the smoking hot supermodel with a slight drug problem that sleeps with all your friends: she's gorgeous, she's a businesswoman, she's smart as hell and knocks head all over the place. She makes you feel like a million bucks but then (usually every 7-10years) she makes you cry, curse, lose weight, get anxiety, need a shrink and want to kill urself. Dubai is the virginal Miss Universe: the perfect breasts, the perfect waist, the perfect smile (showing off the perfect teeth) but when asked to speak into a mic, she'll say "I want to save the whales...." She's plastic fantastic and good for her. WOOHOOO for both.
The only thing I will take issue with you for is the fact that Dubai would DEFINITELY never have been what it is, if it wasn't for the Lebanese civil war. Dubai (unlike rest of GCC) has almost zero oil. In the 60s and 70s, Bierut wasn't just a hedonistic corner or Paris as you describe. It was a major business hub: Sony's Middle East headquarters were in Beirut, Esso, Exxon, Mobil, Siemens, Philips, Alcatel, and almost every German companies' Middle East operations ran from Beirut. After the civil war started MOST of these companies still stayed and didnt budge (though moving its high level expats out). It was only after the kidnappings in the 80s happened that these companies started getting scared for their expats and shipped out. So where to next? Where could Westerners find a semi-friendly govt., SOMEWHAT tolerant, and offering (the most important selling point) no income tax and no corporate tax: DUBAI!
Arguing if Beirut is better than Dubai or vice versa is pointless, its like saying the supermodel is hotter than Miss Universe. Do what I do: FUCK THEM BOTH!
edit: I do apologize to the female contingent of TH for my slightly simplified and absurdly sexist comparison of the two but hope you chuckle anyway
