Cant be bothered to read all the posts, but i understand the general vibe of this debate. Im not one of those unrealistic Lebanese that keeps boasting about their past, but I am someone who saw both Beirut and Dubai and the clearest distinction you can make is that dubai has no identity or culture, its a place that benifited from the burst of regional natural wealth benifits at a certain point in time, and especially from the big families who live in Abu Dhabi, and became a merger and common benifit for the superpowers all over the globe, a place where money laundered and terrorist cash can both be invested in some mega structure without anyone ever knowing or caring! This place couldve well been Beirut, but the Beirut mosaic that is its society is very different. Crow talks about the present, and in this moment of time a city which is rich in culture like beirut ranks higher on the appeal scale than Dubai, a place that looks like the offspring of Vegas and Disney Land (as a great comedian once said)! I still love Dubai, but im sorry bro Beirut is something else. Cities are not what they if it wasnt for their rich histories. London wouldnt be the awesome place it is today if it isnt for all the events from the romans to the great london fire! Paris wouldnt be the place it is if it wasnt for a timeline of events covering everything from the French revolution while passing over WW2, and so on. Dubai's timeline :
- Used by the Brits to dock their ships before heading to the Indian sub-continet
- Got its name from the brits who used to call it "The Bay"
- Was forgotten tribal lands for like ever
- Families from Saudi and Abu Dhabi decide to invest in it in the 70s
- Nothing major apart from the world trade centers on Sheikh Zaid until 1991
- BOOOOMMM .. And Dubai is born
