the gulf in general (Dubai, Qatar and Co) are trying so hard to leap towards ultra technological advances too fast that they're losing the most important aspect of living.. HAVING A SOUL!
many ppl are working there but very few actually enjoy life! and it's not only due to harsh weather but the fact that little attention is paid about building an enjoyable style of living, everyone just care for getting money the fastest way possible!!
no1 can really build the soul of a city except its locals! locals that would try to make their country a joyful place to live instead of traveling half the year around the globe in search of happiness!

People live in Albania and enjoy themselves. I'd be lying if I said i was miserable here and "walking like a robot"--I'm defo not. yes they are douchebags for letting it slip away in such fashion and for thinking they can buy/build the heart and soul of a city. But hey might as well milk it if you have to.

so many opinions in this thread very few are educated ones!!
as any "informed", financial analyst would tell you the whole global economic crisis is mainly consisting of two intertwined agents:
1) Financial Institutions.
2) Real Estate.
The Dubai economy was MAINLY reliant on these two factors in its economical growth model, so its only logical for it to get hit hard during the global economical crisis.
The Abu Dhabi government will not allow a total economical collapse of Dubai and have the means to help it out until the credit crunch storm weathers out.
I wish 10% of our "Jarab" nations would have governments with half the vision of Dubai (and yes that includes the Lebanese government).
